California Embraces Digital IDs

It has now been confirmed that the company is collaborating with the state of California to integrate digital IDs into the Apple Wallet. This implies that whether you are going through a security check at the airport or when getting served at a bar, your California driver’s license or state ID is just a swipe away.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed the excitement we’re all feeling: Apple has stated that, ‘We’re looking forward to seeing IDs in Apple Wallet available for residents of the state of California later this year, and giving people an effortless, secure, and private way to present their California driver’s license and state ID both in person and in-app with Apple Wallet.’

The Benefits of Having a Digital ID

Therefore, what is so bad about having your ID on your phone? Well, imagine this: It is the kind of situation where you are at the airport and instead of digging into your pockets to bring out that thin plastic, just take out your iPhone or look at your Apple Watch. ID presented. And it is not only for traveling purposes; you can use it to clear the age restriction when purchasing certain products or for using specific applications. In essence, technology has gone a notch higher by introducing for you a mini-you who resides in your phone!

But wait a moment or two —before you start to get excited and start leaving home without your physical ID card remember you have to use it all the same. The digital ID is not a replacement, but a more convenient way to work with an ID. Well, at least going digital is an option, but you are not out of the woods with the physical card just yet.

California, a Little Late to the Party

At this point, elaborate, you may be asking, “Why did it take California so long to join this?” Apple initially unveiled the digital IDs in 2021. California is the newest state to get on board with the feature, although five other states – Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio – have already integrated the feature into their DMVS. It’s almost witty to be late, but at least one is dressed properly for the occasion – or is there an occasion?

As for the launch, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that it is coming in the weeks, and it is not for Apple Wallet only. Another intriguing feature is that Google Wallet users will be able to save their California IDs in digital form. Thus, no matter which side you take, Apple or Android, you are in the right side.

However, the following are some useful instructions on how you as an individual can obtain your digital ID:

If you’re ready for this new tech, follow these steps. To get your California digital ID in Apple Wallet, you will have to participate in the California Department of Motor Vehicles’ mDL pilot program. This could be very inconveniencing, especially if you have to rummage through your bag every time to get your ID card.

In conclusion, while it took California some time to embrace the digital ID system, the benefits of the convenience and ease are visible. So, it is time to welcome taking one small step for California and one giant leap for your wallet’s organization!
