A secure global roaming access service called Eduroam (education roaming) was created with the worldwide research and education community in mind. It offers simple, safe internet access for workers, researchers, and students when they visit other partner universities. In 2024, you can connect to eduroam using these steps:

Step 1: Confirm your eligibility

Be sure your institution is a member of the eduroam network before attempting to connect to it. Usually, the website for your institution’s network or IT services has this information.

Step 2: Install the necessary certificates

To safely authenticate to eduroam, many universities require you to install a security certificate. To carry out this:

  • Go to the eduroam setup page for your school; it’s usually located on the network services or IT help page.
  • Download the necessary certificate, which is often in the.cer or.crt extension.
  • Observe the guidelines provided by your device to install the certificate. Depending on whether you’re using Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or Linux, this could change.

Step 3: Configure Your Device

  1. For Windows 10/11
  • Open Network & Internet Settings: Right-click on the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar and select “Open Network & Internet settings.”
  • Select ‘Wi-Fi’: Click on “Wi-Fi” in the left-hand menu, then “Manage known networks.”
  • Add a Network: Click “Add a new network” and enter the following:
  • Network name: eduroam
  • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3-Enterprise
  • EAP method: PEAP
  • Authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • Username: Your institutional email address (e.g., username@institution.edu)
  • Password: Your institutional password
  • Connect: Save the settings and connect to eduroam.
  1. For macOS
  • Open Network Preferences: Click the Apple icon and select “System Preferences,” then “Network.”
  • Select Wi-Fi: Choose the Wi-Fi option and click “Advanced.”

  • Network name: eduroam
  • Security: WPA2 Enterprise or WPA3 Enterprise
  • Username: Your institutional email address
  • Password: Your institutional password
  • Configure 802.1X: Under the “802.1X” tab, make sure “PEAP” is selected and MSCHAPv2 is the authentication protocol.
  • Connect: Click “OK” and then “Apply” to connect.
  1. For iOS (iPhone/iPad)
  • Open Settings: Go to “Settings” and tap on “Wi-Fi.”
  • Select eduroam: Tap on the eduroam network when it appears.
  • Username: Your institutional email address
  • Password: Your institutional password

  • EAP Method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • CA certificate: Use system certificates or select your institution’s certificate
  • Identity: Your institutional email address
  • Password: Your institutional password
  • Connect: Save the settings and connect to eduroam.
  1. For Linux
  • Open Network Manager: Depending on your distribution, this can vary, but generally, you’ll find it under system settings or network settings.
  • Add eduroam: Click “Add” to create a new network connection.
  • SSID: eduroam
  • Wi-Fi Security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise or WPA3 Enterprise
  • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • Username: Your institutional email address

  • Connect: Apply the settings and connect.

Step 4: Troubleshoot Typical Problems

  • Problems with Authentication: Verify your username and password one more time. Make sure the email address you are using is your entire institutional address.
  • Certificate Mistakes: Make sure the right certificate is trusted and installed.
  • Weak Signal: If you’re having trouble connecting, consider getting closer to a Wi-Fi access point or enquire about signal problems with the IT department of your university.

Step 5: Remain Safe

  • Employ a VPN: Although eduroam is generally safe, an additional degree of security can be added by using a VPN.
  • Maintain Updating Your Software: Update the Wi-Fi and operating system drivers frequently to maintain security and compatibility.

In summary

Whether you’re at your home institution or a different one, connecting to eduroam in 2024 is a simple process. You may get dependable, safe internet access at any participating location across the globe by following these instructions. Your institution’s IT support staff is the best place to go if you need assistance. Cheers to many more waves!
