Apple is making waves with some interesting news: they wish to assemble the next iPhone 17 starting from its groundwork in India. If this plan materializes, it may be a new story for both Apple and India!
What’s Happening?
Originally, Apple opened the production of the new iPhones in China. But this time around they have chosen to begin a gradual process of the early development of the base iPhone 17 model in India; in the particular Foxconn plant in Bengaluru. This is new for Apple since the New Product Introduction (NPI), which is a critical process, has always been operated initially outside India.
NPI is a pretty big deal. It is a phase where Apple actually takes the prototype designs and turns them into products which can be manufactured for the population to consume and which are without flaw. This occurs from October through to May; during this period materials and manufacturing methods and processes are also experimented with.
Although India will deal with the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the even slimmer iPhone 17 Air remain in development in China where the company has perfected craft of high-end manufacturing.
India Steps Up
Although still unconfirmed, we have early information about the company’s latest offering, known internally as the iPhone 17 V57 which has recently reached a major development stage referred to as “proto-1.” This is where they create a set of units in order to inspect the quality of the build. Apple has to consider whether products that are developed in India as prototypes are up to the same standards as those developed at their California base.
If all goes well, Apple may even extend this manufacturing strategy to other locations, also to China where the company has remained relevant. It is also in line with a longer term plan to rationalize manufacturing towards the final assembly points, which may well prove more economical for Apple.
Why India?
Since 2017, the company has been expanding efforts towards production in India step by step. The change is not only to save money but also to decrease reliance on China, especially with the new confrontation between Beijing and Washington, India has already done well by assembling all four models of the iPhone 16 and the more expensive Pro versions.
In fact, it reached the export figure of almost $6 billion in iPhones manufactured in India which in itself increased by 30% from the last year.
What’s Next?
In light of this, Apple is not only concentrating on manufacturing. There are also plans to recruit approximately 400 employees to cater the establishment of the stores in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. With two showrooms already operational, in Mumbai and Delhi respectively, it seems like Apple is all in on its India chapter.
If India succeeds in getting the initial phases of iPhone 17 right, more electronics could be designed and manufactured there – including more Apples.
Final Thoughts
Apple’s decision to at least try to use India as the Testing Ground for iPhone 17 is like adding a new secret ingredient to the recipe – who knows it might just become permanent. This step, for one, will deepen Apple’s roots in the Indian market and, at the same time, expand its manufacturing beyond primarily China.
Now, all is focused on Foxconn’s Bengaluru manufacturing site. If everything turns out as planned then, we are likely to witness the beginning of a new chapter in Apple manufacturing strategy with his emphasis on India ever before.
