Ford has unveiled the all-new Puma Gen-E, a fully electric version of its best-selling crossover, set to rival the likes of the Mini Aceman and Peugeot e-2008. Priced from £29,995, the Puma Gen-E brings electric power to the fast-growing crossover segment, offering a sustainable driving experience with an impressive 234 miles of range on a single charge.

A Familiar Look with a Fresh Twist

The Puma Gen-E retains the familiar design of its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling, maintaining its stylish crossover appeal. However, Ford has introduced subtle tweaks to differentiate the electric variant. The most notable changes are a new front-end design inspired by the Mustang Mach-E and the removal of tailpipes, a clear signal of the vehicle’s electric credentials. These updates give the Gen-E a modern and clean look, while still maintaining the rugged charm of the Puma.

Range and Efficiency

Underneath the sleek exterior, the Puma Gen-E features an adapted version of the B-car platform from its ICE counterpart. This platform has been reworked to accommodate a 43kWh floor-mounted battery that provides a WLTP range of up to 234 miles in the standard Select model and 226 miles in the Premium trim. This range is competitive, especially considering the e-2008’s 50kWh battery, which delivers 212 miles per charge.

Charging the Puma Gen-E is also a breeze. With a charging speed of up to 100kW, the battery can be charged from 10-80% in just 23 minutes, making it a highly efficient choice for those on the go.

Power and Performance

Powering the Puma Gen-E is a front-mounted single electric motor, delivering 166bhp and 214lb-ft of torque. This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just eight seconds and reach a top speed of 99mph, providing a spirited driving experience while maintaining efficiency.

Ford has designed the Gen-E to be a versatile option for those looking to make the transition to electric without compromising on performance or style. The new crossover’s driving dynamics promise to be engaging, thanks to its precise handling and responsive powertrain.

Gigabox Storage and Practicality

One of the standout features of the Puma Gen-E is its innovative Gigabox, a new underfloor storage compartment that increases boot space from 456 liters to a class-leading 523 liters with the seats up. This makes the Gen-E more practical than competitors like the Mini Aceman, offering an additional 223 liters of boot space. Additionally, the car boasts a 43-liter “frunk” (front trunk), offering even more storage options for everyday use.

Interior Technology and Features

Inside, the Puma Gen-E mirrors the cabin of the ICE version, with a sleek and modern dashboard featuring a 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 12.8-inch digital instrument display adds to the tech-forward vibe. The cabin also features sports seats, physical climate control buttons, and a new phone storage cubby with an integrated wireless charging pad.

For those who opt for the Premium trim, additional features include a Bang & Olufsen speaker system, keyless entry, hands-free boot access, and stylish 18-inch alloy wheels, with 19-inch wheels available as an option. Matrix LED headlights are also available for enhanced visibility.

Pricing and Availability

The Puma Gen-E starts at £29,995, making it £3,645 more expensive than the ICE version. The top-spec Premium trim is priced at £31,995. Ford aims to enter production of the electric crossover alongside the combustion-powered Puma at its Craiova facility in Romania. With its competitive pricing, practical features, and modern tech, the Puma Gen-E is poised to make a significant impact in the electric crossover market.
