Amid growing discontent with social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, Reddit communities have begun banning links to X, signaling a shift in how online discussions are shaping up. While Reddit as a platform has stayed neutral, its users, especially subreddit moderators, are increasingly taking action.
A Surge in X Link Bans
Since Tuesday, Reddit users across multiple subreddits have voted to restrict links to X, reflecting a collective pushback against the platform. Many of these bans were initiated by subreddit moderators, volunteers who enforce the rules of their respective communities. As of now, dozens of subreddits have either voted to stop allowing X links or are discussing doing so.
The trend started among sports-focused subreddits, like those for the NFL, the Vancouver Canucks, and Liverpool FC, but quickly spread to various other topics. Some users have justified the bans by citing Elon Musk’s controversial actions and decisions since acquiring Twitter. Concerns about Musk’s management style, the restrictions on viewing tweets without a X account, and recent political controversies—like the alleged Nazi salute during Trump’s presidential inauguration—have fueled these decisions.
Subreddits like r/londonontario and r/Christianity have pointed to these controversies as reasons for banning X links. The issue is divisive, as some users feel the platform’s direction under Musk goes against their values.
Nuanced Rules for Sharing X Content
Not all subreddits are implementing blanket bans on X. For example, r/Seahawks introduced a rule prohibiting links to X while still allowing videos from the platform—so long as they aren’t AI-generated. One of the moderators explained that social media platforms have a responsibility to stay neutral in political and social matters, encouraging users to focus on the subreddit’s core topic instead.
“The internet has never been a place of free speech, and it never will be. We hope you understand this decision and continue to talk about Seahawks football,” the post stated.
Reddit’s Approach to User-Driven Decisions
While Reddit’s corporate stance has been to stay out of the issue, it has made it clear that subreddit moderators are free to make their own decisions regarding banned content. A Reddit spokesperson emphasized that users have always had the ability to establish community rules, including restrictions on certain platforms like X.
“The company does not impose a sitewide ban on X links, nor does it interfere with individual subreddit decisions,” the spokesperson said. They pointed out that banning external links isn’t unique to X—subreddits like r/EarthPorn and r/AskReddit have long restricted links in favor of maintaining specific discussion types. Reddit’s hands-off policy gives its users significant autonomy, allowing them to create the type of space they feel aligns with their values.
Meta Platforms Also Under Scrutiny
The dissatisfaction isn’t limited to X. Some Reddit users are now pushing to ban content from Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These calls are largely in response to recent policy changes by Meta, including the scaling back of diversity programs and the elimination of third-party fact-checkers under CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The subreddit r/antiwork, with nearly 3 million members, has followed suit by instituting a ban on both X and Meta platforms. This move stems from concerns that these companies’ policies encourage bigotry. Furthermore, r/antiwork has also prohibited content from TikTok and Rednote, platforms linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
Polarization in Online Spaces
These efforts on Reddit reflect a broader trend of polarization in online spaces, a shift exacerbated by political tensions and the increasing influence of figures like Musk and Zuckerberg. The uproar surrounding the recent inauguration of Trump and Musk’s growing ties with U.S. government affairs have intensified debates about social media’s role in shaping public discourse.
