The much-anticipated Spider-Man 2 has finally swung onto PC, but unlike its predecessors, the game’s launch has been met with disappointment. While past PlayStation-to-PC ports have been well-received for their optimization and stability, this latest release is facing a wave of criticism. With Steam reviews currently sitting at a “Mixed” rating, players are reporting a range of technical problems, from crashes to performance issues, dampening the excitement around Insomniac’s critically acclaimed title.

Spider-Man 2’s Rough Start on PC

Upon release, Spider-Man 2 quickly amassed over 1,400 reviews on Steam, but only 55% of them are positive. This stands in stark contrast to previous PlayStation PC ports like Spider-Man Remastered and God of War, which were praised for their smooth gameplay and minimal technical issues.

Many players have voiced their frustration over persistent bugs, stuttering, audio desync, and unexpected crashes. Some have even reported experiencing as many as five crashes within just an hour of gameplay. Other issues include lighting glitches, performance inconsistencies, and problems when using certain in-game abilities.

One frustrated player shared their experience, stating:

“Game started crashing after 10 minutes of play.” – Exalio

A Potentially Rushed Release?

One theory behind the game’s problematic launch is that Nixxes Software and PlayStation may have rushed the port due to an earlier leak. Prior to the official PC release, a playable version of the game had surfaced online, leading many to speculate that the developers pushed the game out prematurely to mitigate losses. If this is true, it would explain the uncharacteristically poor performance of a Nixxes-ported game, as the studio is known for delivering polished PC conversions.

Crashes and GPU Issues Dominate Complaints

While PC players expected Spider-Man 2 to be more demanding than previous PlayStation ports, the game’s official system requirements didn’t indicate this level of instability. The biggest problem appears to be random crashes, which occur frequently across different hardware configurations. Even players with high-end gaming PCs have reported unexpected frame drops and GPU-related crashes, leading some to believe the game may require new driver updates from major manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD.

Other reported issues include:

  • Severe frame rate drops in open-world traversal
  • Audio desynchronization during cutscenes
  • Graphical glitches, especially with lighting and shadows
  • Game-breaking bugs when using certain in-game abilities

Should You Buy Spider-Man 2 on PC?

For now, many players are recommending that PC gamers hold off on purchasing Spider-Man 2 until a series of patches and updates improve performance. Given Nixxes’ track record, it is expected that fixes will arrive in the coming weeks, but for those who value a smooth experience from day one, waiting is the safer option.

One silver lining is that Spider-Man 2 costs $60 on PC, making it slightly cheaper than its $70 PlayStation 5 counterpart. However, given the current issues, even this reduced price may not be enough to justify an immediate purchase.

What’s Next for Spider-Man 2 on PC?

Despite the shaky launch, Nixxes is likely working on patches to address the widespread complaints. If the past is any indication, the game should see improvements over time, much like other troubled PC launches that were eventually patched into stable, high-quality experiences.

Until then, PC players looking for a polished superhero experience might want to revisit Spider-Man Remastered or Miles Morales, both of which remain stellar PlayStation PC ports with minimal issues.
