In a significant move, Microsoft has infused its longstanding Windows applications Notepad, Paint, and Snipping Tool with advanced AI capabilities. These enhancements, currently available to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, aim to modernize the user experience by integrating generative AI features powered by Copilot.

Notepad’s Evolution: From Simple Text Editor to AI-Assisted Writing Tool

Notepad, a staple since Windows 1.0, has traditionally served as a basic text editor. However, Microsoft has introduced a new feature called “Write,” transforming Notepad into an AI-assisted writing tool. This feature allows users to generate text based on prompts, refine existing content, and adjust tone or length, all within the app.

To utilize “Write,” users must sign in with a Microsoft account. The feature is accessible via the Copilot menu, right-click context menu, or by pressing Ctrl+Q. Once activated, users can input prompts, and the AI will generate corresponding text, which can be inserted into the document, refined further, or discarded. This functionality builds upon previous AI tools like “Rewrite” and “Summarize,” which were introduced in November 2024 and March 2025, respectively.

Paint’s AI Makeover: Introducing Sticker Generator and Object Select

Microsoft Paint, another classic application, has received notable AI-driven enhancements. The new “Sticker Generator” allows users to create custom stickers by typing descriptive prompts. For instance, entering “a cat wearing sunglasses” prompts the AI to generate relevant stickers, which can be added to the canvas or used in other applications.

Additionally, the “Object Select” tool leverages AI to isolate and edit specific elements within an image, streamlining the editing process. These features are part of Paint version 11.2504.451.0 and are currently available to users with Copilot+ PCs.

Snipping Tool Enhancements: Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker

The Snipping Tool has also been upgraded with AI capabilities. The “Perfect Screenshot” feature intelligently resizes screenshots based on selected content, reducing the need for manual adjustments. Moreover, a new “Color Picker” tool displays HEX, RGB, or HSL values, allowing for precise color selection. These updates aim to enhance the tool’s utility for designers and developers.

Access and Availability

To access these AI features, users must be part of the Windows Insider Program and have a Microsoft account. The features operate on an AI credit system, with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers receiving 60 AI credits per month, and free Designer app users getting 15 credits monthly. Each AI-powered action consumes one credit. While the features are currently in testing phases, Microsoft plans to roll them out more broadly in future Windows 11 updates.

Community Reception and Future Outlook

The integration of AI into these classic applications has elicited mixed reactions. While some users appreciate the enhanced functionality, others question the necessity of such features in traditionally simple tools like Notepad. Nonetheless, Microsoft’s commitment to embedding AI across its software suite indicates a broader strategy to modernize and enrich user experiences.

As these features continue to evolve, user feedback will play a crucial role in shaping their development and integration into the Windows ecosystem.
