U.S. EV Sales Bounce Back in Q2 2026 as Market Shows Signs of Recovery

In a bittersweet turn for European enthusiasts, Honda has officially announced the end of the road for the Civic Type R (CTR) in Europe. The automaker is marking the occasion with a special send-off: the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition. This final iteration of the beloved hot hatch signals the close of an era, with production wrapping up in 2025 due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations across the continent.

Ultimate Edition: A Stylish Goodbye

The Ultimate Edition is Honda’s tribute to decades of Type R performance excellence. Dressed exclusively in the iconic Championship White paint, it sports bold red striping along the hood and side skirts. A gloss black roof adds contrast and a more aggressive stance, highlighting the model’s track-ready persona.

Performance-wise, the Ultimate Edition remains unchanged from the standard FL5 Civic Type R. Under the hood, it retains its potent 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 324 horsepower and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque. Power is channeled to the front wheels via a precise six-speed manual transmission. The result? A brisk 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of just 5.4 seconds is still one of the best in class.

Exclusive Touches and Collector’s Appeal

What sets the Ultimate Edition apart is a suite of premium aesthetic enhancements. A carbon fiber rear wing tops off the rear profile, while matching carbon accents grace the interior in the form of center console trims and door sills. Red floor mats with metal Type R branding add a final layer of flair.

Further distinguishing it from standard models, the Ultimate Edition features red-and-white illuminated Type R logos projected onto the ground when doors open—an eye-catching touch for fans and collectors alike.

Every buyer of the Ultimate Edition will receive a commemorative gift box, complete with a carbon fiber key ring, a numbered emblem, and a bespoke car cover. These extras ensure the CTR’s final outing in Europe is as memorable as its storied legacy.

The End of the Line, Blame Regulations

Why is Honda retiring one of its most iconic models in Europe? The answer lies in evolving environmental regulations. According to Hannah Swift, Honda’s Head of European Strategy and Product, “The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation.” In simple terms, the CTR’s high-emissions profile no longer aligns with the EU’s aggressive emissions reduction goals.

In markets like the Netherlands, these regulations have already made the Civic Type R prohibitively expensive, with taxes pushing the price above $100,000 even before options.

A New Dawn with the Prelude

Though the Civic Type R is bowing out, Honda isn’t abandoning performance altogether. Set to debut in Europe in 2026, the new Honda Prelude is being resurrected as a sleek 2+2 hybrid coupe. While it won’t match the raw, manual-driven thrill of the CTR, the Prelude promises a different kind of fun, one that blends sportiness with modern efficiency.

As Honda shifts gears towards an electrified future, the Ultimate Edition stands as a poignant farewell to one of the last great analog hot hatches in Europe. Enthusiasts, get it while you still can.
