Grammarly, widely recognized for its artificial intelligence-powered writing assistance, has formally announced its acquisition of Superhuman, an acclaimed email efficiency tool. This strategic move forms a crucial part of Grammarly’s broader ambition to construct a comprehensive AI-powered productivity suite and to substantially diversify its existing business model. Executives from both San Francisco-based companies confirmed the acquisition to Reuters, although specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Superhuman, once an exclusive email platform renowned for maintaining an extensive waitlist for prospective users, was last independently valued at $825 million in 2021 and currently generates an estimated annual revenue of approximately $35 million.

Fueling Growth: Recent Funding and Diversification

This significant acquisition of Superhuman by Grammarly follows closely on the heels of its recent infusion of $1 billion in funding from General Catalyst. This substantial capital injection provides Grammarly with considerable “dry powder” available financial resources to actively pursue its strategy of developing a diverse collection of AI-driven tools tailored for the modern workplace. Founded in 2005, Grammarly boasts an impressive user base of over 40 million daily active users and an annual revenue surpassing $700 million. The company is also reportedly contemplating a change of its corporate name, signalling its aspiration to transcend its foundational role as a grammar correction tool and expand into a much broader productivity landscape.

Superhuman’s AI Prowess and Market Position

Superhuman, which has successfully secured over $110 million in funding from prominent investors including IVP and Andreessen Horowitz, has dedicated its efforts to crafting an exceptionally efficient email experience through the seamless integration of artificial intelligence. The company proudly asserts that its users can send and respond to 72% more emails per hour, demonstrating a tangible boost in productivity. Furthermore, the percentage of emails composed using Superhuman’s integrated AI tools has remarkably increased fivefold over the past year, highlighting the growing adoption and effectiveness of its AI features. Despite these impressive metrics, Superhuman operates within an increasingly competitive environment, as major email providers, from tech giants like Google to Microsoft, are also rapidly incorporating more sophisticated AI capabilities into their own platforms.

Email as the Foundation for AI Agents

Shashir Mehrotra, the Chief Executive Officer of Grammarly, underscored the enduring importance of email in professional life. “Email continues to be the dominant communication tool for the world. Professionals spend something like three hours a day in their inboxes. It’s by far the most used work app, foundational to any productivity suite,” Mehrotra stated, emphasizing the strategic rationale behind the acquisition. He added, “Superhuman is the obvious leading innovator in the space.”

This acquisition builds upon Grammarly’s previous strategic move last year, when it purchased the startup Coda. The integration of Coda provided Grammarly with a robust platform designed for AI agents to assist users with complex tasks such as research, data analysis, and collaborative efforts. According to Mehrotra, who co-founded Coda, integrating email capabilities was the logical next progression in Grammarly’s vision for an interconnected AI-powered workflow.

As part of the acquisition agreement, Superhuman CEO Rahul Vohra will transition into a role within Grammarly’s leadership team, accompanied by over 100 Superhuman employees. Mehrotra confirmed the continuity of the acquired entity, stating, “The Superhuman product, team, and brand will continue. It’s a very well-used product by tens of thousands of people, and we want to see them continue to make progress.”

Vohra himself expressed enthusiasm for the deal, noting that joining forces with Grammarly will grant Superhuman access to significantly greater resources. This, he believes, will enable them to invest even more heavily in advanced AI development, as well as broaden their product offerings to include integrations with calendars, task management, and broader collaboration tools. Both Mehrotra and Vohra envision a seamless integration of Grammarly’s powerful AI agents directly into the Superhuman platform, ultimately aiming to build comprehensive tools specifically tailored for enterprise customers.

The overarching vision is to enable users to tap into a sophisticated network of specialized AI agents. These agents would possess the capability to pull and synthesize data from across a user’s entire digital workflow, encompassing emails, documents, and other digital interactions. This integrated intelligence is designed to drastically reduce the time professionals spend searching for information or meticulously crafting responses. By entering this domain, Grammarly is positioning itself in a highly competitive arena of AI productivity tools, contending with established tech behemoths such as Salesforce and a burgeoning wave of innovative startups.

Grammarly’s acquisition of Superhuman marks a pivotal moment in its evolution from a writing assistant to a holistic AI productivity platform. By embedding its AI deeply into the critical workflow of email and leveraging Superhuman’s expertise, Grammarly aims to empower professionals with intelligent automation that streamlines communication and liberates time for higher-value work. This bold strategic step underscores a clear ambition to redefine how individuals and enterprises interact with their digital workspaces in the AI era.
