Monterey Car Week is no stranger to million-dollar classics and hyper-exclusive supercars, but this year a fully electric SUV stole part of the spotlight. Rivian’s one-of-a-kind R1S Quad Pebble Beach Edition crossed the block at the Broad Arrow Monterey Jet Center Auction, fetching a strong $175,000, that’s $45,000 over its initial estimate.
The best part? Every dollar of the sale is going to WaterAid and #TeamWater, charities focused on providing clean water and sanitation to communities worldwide.
Designed for Monterey, Inspired by the Pacific
Built specifically for Monterey Car Week, the Pebble Beach Edition R1S was created to channel the laid-back yet refined energy of California’s coast. Its bespoke Monterey Silver paint is the star of the exterior a shimmering finish Rivian says was meant to capture “early morning light dancing on Pacific waves.”
This metallic hue is offset by Laguna Beach Blue brake calipers, painted cladding, and custom-forged 22-inch wheels. Even the Rivian badging gets special treatment, outlined in teal to tie in the coastal theme.
A Beach House on Wheels
Inside, the SUV leans fully into its seaside inspiration. Pebble Stone-colored Adventex upholstery covers the seats, paired with textured wood trim for a natural, warm feel. But it’s the details that stand out: the speaker grilles and floor mats feature a unique gradient that fades from deep aqua to a sunlit orange, evoking the transition from ocean to sunset.
Other touches, like the clean, minimal dashboard layout and soft-touch materials — keep the R1S Pebble Beach Edition feeling both premium and inviting, much like a high-end coastal retreat.
Under the Hood: Same Muscle as the Standard R1S Quad
While the aesthetics are unique, performance remains identical to the standard R1S Quad. Underneath, it packs Rivian’s 1,025-horsepower quad-motor powertrain, delivering blistering acceleration and serious off-road capability. This combination of extreme performance and distinctive design likely helped drive the bidding into six-figure territory.
Exclusivity You Can’t Buy Anymore
If you’re thinking of ordering one, think again. This was a true one-off build, and the Pebble Beach Edition won’t be replicated. The winning bidder not only gets an SUV dripping with bespoke details but also the bragging rights of owning the sole example ever made.
For everyone else, the consolation prize is Rivian’s regular R1S Quad, which starts around $125,000, and while it won’t have Monterey Silver paint or aqua-to-orange floor mats, it will still deliver the same high-powered, all-electric performance.
Rivian Steps Into the Collector Car Conversation
This sale is notable not just for the amount raised but for what it represents. Rivian, still a young automaker in the grand scheme, now has a vehicle that crossed into the collector sphere typically reserved for vintage Ferraris and rare Porsches. It signals that EVs, when crafted with the right story, design, and exclusivity can command serious attention at traditional car auctions.
And for Monterey Car Week, it’s proof that the future of collectible cars might be as much about battery packs as it is about big V12s.
