Artificial intelligence has infiltrated nearly every corner of modern life, from acting as a personal tutor to serving as a creative partner. For Malhar Shah, an Indian-origin tech professional based in New Jersey, AI became something much more personal: a career coach. By strategically using ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Shah transformed his job application process ultimately securing a six-figure senior engineering role in one of the most competitive markets in the world.

His journey highlights how AI, when used wisely, can be a game-changer in job searches but also why the human touch remains indispensable.

Shah was navigating a brutal job market for senior engineers. Every posting attracted hundreds of applications, with most résumés eliminated by Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) before a recruiter even glanced at them. He knew that standing out meant more than listing technical skills, he needed to tell a compelling leadership story while also beating the bots.

“The traditional approach wasn’t going to cut it,” Shah explained. “I needed an edge, and AI gave me that.”

How AI Became His Résumé Reviewer

Instead of writing one résumé and sending it everywhere, Shah took a tailored approach. He created four different résumés, each customized for the roles he was targeting: technical lead, staff engineer, engineering manager, and principal engineer.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini acted as virtual recruiters, critiquing each version. Sometimes ChatGPT would rate a résumé a 9 out of 10, while Gemini might only give it a 7. Occasionally, the same résumé earned different scores in separate AI sessions, depending on the prompts.

“I realized the scores weren’t the point,” Shah said. “The value was in the feedback the tweaks, the suggestions, and the way it forced me to look at my résumé from different angles.”

The AI-driven suggestions helped him:

  • Sharpen his language to emphasize leadership and measurable impact.
  • Highlight key achievements with numbers and outcomes.
  • Optimize keywords to pass ATS filters.
  • Improve formatting and clarity for human readers.

Unlike some job seekers who rely on AI to generate résumés from scratch, Shah avoided shortcuts. “Accuracy mattered too much. I didn’t want a generic résumé. I wanted mine just stronger.”

AI as an Interview Coach

Shah didn’t stop at résumés. He also used AI to draft sharper cover letters and prepare for interviews. Running mock sessions with ChatGPT, he practiced both behavioral and technical interview questions.

AI provided instant feedback on his answers, suggesting improvements in tone, structure, and clarity. Iterating through multiple mock sessions allowed him to refine his delivery and feel more confident.

“The ability to simulate interview scenarios and adjust in real-time was huge,” he said. “It felt like training with a coach who never gets tired.”

Despite AI’s role, Shah insists his success was not purely digital. A former colleague offered what he describes as the most valuable advice of his job hunt: don’t let the search consume your life.

“He told me to keep it to two hours a day max,” Shah recalled. “Spend some time learning new skills, and most importantly, stay connected with family. That balance kept me sharp without burning out.”

This mindset helped Shah maintain perspective and avoid the exhaustion that plagues many job seekers.

Doing the Homework First

Another key to Shah’s success was that he didn’t rely on AI blindly. Before experimenting with tools and prompts, he invested time in researching hiring trends, studying what top companies look for in senior engineering roles, and making sure his own career accomplishments were framed in terms of impact and relevance.

By feeding high-quality inputs into AI, Shah was able to extract meaningful, actionable suggestions rather than generic advice.

Looking back, Shah believes his journey reflects a broader shift in how professionals will approach career advancement. AI won’t hand anyone a dream job, but it can help candidates become more polished, strategic, and confident.

“AI didn’t get me the job,” Shah emphasizes. “But it absolutely helped me become a stronger candidate.”

His story underscores a larger point: the most effective job seekers will blend human strategy with AI-powered efficiency. AI can accelerate iteration, provide feedback, and simulate scenarios, but the depth of research, the authenticity of achievements, and the ability to connect with people remain uniquely human strengths.

Lessons for Job Seekers

Shah’s experience offers several lessons for professionals navigating today’s tough job market:

  1. Tailor Your Résumé: One size doesn’t fit all. Customize your résumé for each role.
  2. Use AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement: AI works best as a reviewer, not a ghostwriter.
  3. Practice Interviews with AI: Simulations can help sharpen your answers and delivery.
  4. Protect Your Well-being: Set boundaries on job search time to avoid burnout.
  5. Do the Research: AI amplifies your inputs, if your data is weak, your results will be too.

For Malhar Shah, ChatGPT and Gemini weren’t magic bullets, they were powerful tools that, when combined with strategy, discipline, and human advice, helped him land a high-paying senior role. His story is both a success narrative and a roadmap for job seekers: AI can open doors, but it’s up to you to walk through them.
