Infiniti has shaken up the luxury sedan landscape this week at its dealer conference in Las Vegas, dropping hints of a bold new direction for its Q50 lineup. Enthusiasts may want to sit down: the brand is reportedly reviving rear-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a twin-turbo engine in a sport-focused Q50S set to debut in late 2027.
Q50 Gets a True Sport Sedan Makeover
According to Automotive News, the next Q50, badged Q50S, will be built on the Japanese Nissan Skyline sedan platform, echoing Infiniti’s performance roots. The centerpiece under the hood will be a version of the twin-turbo V6 currently found in the Nissan Z, producing 400 horsepower. An even more potent Red Sport variant—a hallmark of Infiniti’s performance line is “being considered,” signaling that the brand may be aiming to appeal to enthusiasts hungry for both performance and luxury.
Infiniti Americas Vice President Tiago Castro described the redesigned Q50 as “unapologetic and unexpected,” suggesting the brand is serious about crafting a sedan that stands out in a crowded luxury market.
A Nostalgia Play for Driving Purists
This move positions Infiniti uniquely in the current market. Manual-transmission luxury sedans are increasingly rare in the U.S., with the Acura Integra, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, and select BMW models like the M2 stick offering the only remaining options for purists. The Q50S could become the only four-door sedan in its class to combine rear-wheel drive with a manual gearbox, hitting a sweet spot for elder millennials and Gen Xers who remember the thrill of driving Maximas and G35s two decades ago.
By leveraging the Skyline platform and the proven Z-series engine, Infiniti is sidestepping the challenges of building a performance car from scratch. Experts suggest that modest tuning, along with intake and exhaust adjustments, could easily push the twin-turbo V6 beyond its Z-spec output, giving the Q50S a legitimate performance edge without major engineering overhauls.
A Strategic Move in a Changing Market
The plan is as surprising as it is strategic. Investing in a niche, enthusiast-focused sedan in 2025 seems counterintuitive, given the industry-wide pivot toward electrification. Yet Infiniti’s decision aligns with a broader trend of taking advantage of America’s current regulatory environment, where traditional internal combustion technology still has room to flourish. It also creates a clear differentiator for the brand, offering a real reason for car enthusiasts to consider Infiniti over other luxury competitors.
Design Teasers Spark Interest
Infiniti has teased the low-slung model with a video highlighting a swoopy silhouette, slender headlights, and Skyline-inspired circular taillights. The visual cues suggest a design that honors the brand’s past while looking firmly to the future, blending nostalgia with contemporary styling.
With more details expected in the coming months, the Q50S promises to inject excitement into the luxury sedan segment at a time when many brands are moving toward homogeneity. For enthusiasts craving an engaging driving experience, Infiniti might just be bringing back one of the most thrilling sedans of the next decade.
