Can I reset the password on my MacBook?

Yes, you can easily reset your MacBook password as it is pretty simple. On the login screen, if you enter an incorrect password three times, a message or a prompt will appear asking if you want to reset it using your Apple ID. This is the place where you can make it happen, especially in cases when you actually forget the password. Alternatively, you can restart the computer and hold down Command + R to enter Recovery Mode and use the “Utilities” menu to reset the password, which works just fine too.

Steps to reset the password on a MacBook

If you want to reset the password on a MacBook, then these are the steps that you need to follow –

Apple ID Reset

  • This is the way you actually forget a password. But you can also do it otherwise. On the login screen, intentionally type the wrong password three times to begin.
  • After you do so, a message or a prompt will pop up asking if you want to reset the password using your Apple ID.
  • When that message shows up, click on the arrow. Now enter your Apple ID and password and then create a new password. Make sure that the password that you keep, or set is something that you will remember. Also, it should be something that is hard to crack for others.

Using the Recovery Mode

  • The other method is to use the Recovery mode. It is an equally reliable way of getting the password to set again on a Macbook. To begin this, restart your MacBook and immediately hold down Command (⌘) + R.
  • Now once you find yourself in macOS Recovery, select Utilities from the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  • Once you’re there, choose Terminal and type resetpassword, then press Return.
  • The consecutive steps can be seen and followed on the screen in order to finally set a new password.

These steps can help you reset your MacBook password. If you are unable to do so under any circumstances, reach out to the help centres.

How should I set my MacBook password?

A MacBook password like any other password shouldn’t be an easy guess. If you are using common patterns as your password, it loosens your privacy on the device. Make sure the password is something that is either related to you or something you can remember easily. Also, if you can note it down somewhere safe, that can be of help when you need it.

If you have happened to forget your MacBook password, or simply want to change it to something better, the ways that we mentioned above are to be followed. It is simple and only takes a few minutes.
