A series of undersea cable disruptions in the Red Sea caused widespread internet issues across Asia and the Middle East over the weekend, affecting millions of users and slowing down services in key markets such as India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
While the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, the episode highlights just how vulnerable global communications infrastructure can be when geopolitical tensions overlap with critical technology systems.
Undersea Cables: The Internet’s Hidden Lifeline
The global internet relies heavily on an intricate network of submarine cables, which carry the vast majority of international data traffic. These high-capacity fiber-optic lines run for thousands of kilometers along the seafloor, linking continents and enabling everything from video calls to global financial transactions.
When such cables are damaged, internet service providers typically reroute traffic to maintain connectivity. While this prevents complete outages, users often experience slower speeds, longer loading times, and disrupted services. Repairing these cables is a complex process, requiring specialized ships to locate and mend the damaged sections—a process that can take weeks.
Microsoft and NetBlocks Confirm the Disruptions
Microsoft was among the first major firms to acknowledge the disruption, issuing a notice on its service status page. The company warned that internet users in the Middle East “may experience increased latency due to undersea fiber cuts in the Red Sea.” It reassured customers that internet traffic routed outside the region was unaffected, though it offered no further technical details.
Independent watchdog NetBlocks, which tracks internet availability worldwide, confirmed that “a series of subsea cable outages in the Red Sea” had degraded connectivity across several countries. The organization pointed to failures in two major systems—the South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4 (SMW4) cable and the India-Middle East-Western Europe (IMEWE) cable—both near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
These cables are vital for transferring data between Asia and Europe. SMW4 is operated by Tata Communications, part of India’s Tata Group, while IMEWE is run by a consortium led by French telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent. Both operators have yet to comment publicly on the incident.
Regional Impact: South Asia to the Gulf
The impact of the disruptions was immediately felt across South Asia and the Middle East. Pakistan Telecommunications, one of the country’s leading operators, confirmed on Saturday that the cuts had occurred, cautioning users about slower services.
In India, internet users reported difficulties with international traffic, particularly affecting cloud services and video platforms that rely on high-speed transcontinental connections.
In the Gulf, residents of the United Arab Emirates—particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi—complained about slower browsing speeds on Du and Etisalat, the country’s state-owned providers. Despite widespread reports, neither the UAE nor Saudi Arabian authorities issued immediate responses acknowledging the incident.
Possible Explanations for the Cable Cuts
Undersea cables are highly vulnerable to both natural and human-related risks. Ship anchors dragging along the seafloor, deep-sea fishing operations, or seismic activity can unintentionally damage them. However, deliberate sabotage is also considered a possibility, especially in conflict zones.
Repairs are rarely straightforward. Once damage is located, specialized vessels must lift the cable to the surface for inspection and replacement, a task that requires precision and often faces delays due to weather or security concerns.
Conflict in the Red Sea Adds to Concerns
The timing of these outages has intensified speculation, as they come amid ongoing unrest in the Red Sea region. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, have been conducting attacks on commercial ships in what they describe as retaliation against Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched over 100 missile and drone strikes against international vessels, sinking at least four ships and killing eight sailors. Their actions have already raised alarm about the security of vital shipping lanes, and now attention is turning to the safety of critical internet infrastructure.
Although the Houthis have denied deliberately targeting undersea cables, Yemen’s internationally recognized government previously accused them of plotting such strikes. Several cables were damaged earlier this year, though responsibility was never conclusively determined. On Sunday, the Houthis’ al-Masirah satellite television channel acknowledged reports of the latest cable cuts, citing NetBlocks as a source.
Broader Political Implications
The incident also comes at a sensitive geopolitical moment. Ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas remain fragile, while tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate.
In late 2024, U.S. President Donald Trump authorized an extended campaign of airstrikes against Houthi targets before later announcing a temporary ceasefire. Despite the pause, Houthi attacks at sea soon resumed.
Meanwhile, negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program have stalled after Israel launched a 12-day offensive against the Islamic Republic, during which U.S. forces struck three Iranian nuclear facilities. These developments have left the region on edge, with infrastructure like undersea cables increasingly caught in the crossfire of global power struggles.
