A Return for the “Plus” Model With a New Look

Why the Plus Model Matters and the Strategy Shift

New design renders of the Galaxy S26 Plus have resurfaced, revealing that Samsung appears to have retained the “Plus” variant for early 2026 contrary to earlier rumours of its cancellation. These renders show that the S26 Plus maintains much of the familiar design language from its predecessor, but introduces a key visual change: a repositioned, smaller camera island beneath its triple-lens array rather than the previous larger or full-width modules.

At one point, industry leaks suggested Samsung would drop the Plus model in favour of an ultra-slim “Edge” version, but the new renders indicate the Plus is alive and well. According to the leaks, the device is expected to debut in early 2026 alongside the wider S26 lineup.

Design Highlights: Camera Island, Thickness & Build

One of the most notable changes in the leaked design is the restructuring of the rear camera module. Instead of a full-width or oversized island, the S26 Plus render shows a compact island positioned directly beneath the lenses, giving the back panel a cleaner look. This mirrors similar treatments seen in leaks for the S26 Ultra and S26 Pro.

The phone’s thickness is reported at 7.35 mm, which is roughly on par with the S25 Plus, and notably thicker than some of the ultra-thin “Edge” style rumours suggested (which hinted at sub-6 mm designs). This indicates Samsung may be prioritising build quality and structural integrity over pursuing ultra-slimness across all variants.

Meanwhile, some rumours still point to a separate “More Slim” Edge-type variant under development, but the Plus model appears to be the mainstay stretch mid-flagship for 2026.

Why the Plus Model Matters and the Strategy Shift

Earlier speculation had Samsung removing the Plus variant entirely, replacing it with an Edge or Pro model to simplify its portfolio. But new information suggests Samsung has re-embraced the Plus model recognising that it still holds strategic value, especially for buyers wanting premium specs without Ultra-tier pricing.

By retaining the Plus, Samsung keeps a middle ground in the lineup: above the standard edition, below the Ultra. The refreshed shape and camera island offer visual distinction without radically changing the brand language. For consumers, the value is in getting high-end features and modern design for a slightly more accessible price point.

For buyers looking toward next year’s flagship from Samsung, the S26 Plus seems poised to offer a compelling mix: premium design cues (e.g., refined camera island), modern internals (expected upgrades), and a tier that may deliver strong value compared to the Ultra. The continuation of the Plus line means more choice not fewer  for consumers seeking flagship experiences without going all-out on the Ultra model.

The smaller island design may also appeal from an aesthetic standpoint: fewer visual distractions, cleaner back panel, and more uniform feel. If the Plus can match or exceed the previous generation’s core features (display quality, camera performance, battery life) while introducing subtle design refinements, it could be a winning proposition.

In summary, the leaked renders of the Galaxy S26 Plus signal that Samsung is doubling down on the Plus variant for early 2026, with a refreshed design centred around a smaller, subtler camera island and a thickness that balances premium build with usability. While it doesn’t represent a complete reinvention, the changes suggest thoughtful evolution rather than revolution maintaining continuity in the S-series while refining key touchpoints of build and design. For those eyeing a top-mid flagship next year, the S26 Plus may strike an attractive balance of performance, design and value.
