Caroline Ellison Transferred to Halfway House After Serving 11 Months

Caroline Ellison, the former co-CEO of Alameda Research and the government’s star witness in the trial against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, is no longer behind bars. Less than a year after reporting to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, the 31-year-old has been transferred to a halfway house to serve out the remainder of her sentence.

Ellison, who was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2024, was moved from the low-security facility on October 16, 2025. She served approximately 11 months of her term inside the prison walls. The transfer marks the beginning of her reintegration into society, a sharp contrast to the decades-long road ahead for her former boyfriend and boss, Bankman-Fried.

From Cellblock to Community Confinement

Ellison has been classified as being in community confinement by the Bureau of Prisons and has been placed in a temporary living situation (a Halfway House). Depending upon his current status, he may also be living at home with very close supervision until the end of his prison sentence. While she remains in federal custody, the move allows for significantly more freedom than the dormitory-style living of FCI Danbury.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons confirmed the transfer to Business Insider but declined to provide specific details regarding her location or the exact terms of her confinement. “For privacy, safety, and security reasons,” the spokesperson stated, the agency does not disclose the specific whereabouts of inmates in community transition programs.

The ‘Cooperator’s Discount’

Ellison’s early release from incarceration is directly attributable to federal policies providing for the commutation of sentences for non-violent felons who have demonstrated good behavior and engaged in vocational and educational programs while incarcerated. As such, Ellison’s short period of confinement demonstrates the validity of her supporting evidence and testimony.

During the explosive trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, Ellison provided the “smoking gun” evidence that prosecutors needed to secure a conviction. She detailed how Alameda Research siphoned billions of dollars in customer funds from FTX to cover risky bets and lifestyle expenses. While her lawyers originally argued against incarceration because she was so cooperative, the judge ultimately ruled that incarceration should be imposed because of the enormity of the $8 billion fraud. Nevertheless, the judge did limit the length of incarceration (not to exceed 11 months) when determining the minimum and maximum penalties which would have been otherwise available to the court.

A Tale of Two Sentences

The disparity between the fates of the FTX inner circle has become a defining feature of the saga’s conclusion. While Ellison serves the rest of her time in relative comfort, Sam Bankman-Fried remains at a federal facility in California, serving a 25-year sentence. He is not eligible for release until he is well into his 50s.

Ellison’s situation also contrasts with other former lieutenants. Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, both of whom also flipped on Bankman-Fried, received sentences of time served—meaning they faced no prison time at all. Their total freedom underscores the unique position Ellison occupied: highly culpable as the CEO of Alameda, yet indispensable to the prosecution’s victory.

Bitcoin’s Bull Run During Her Absence

The crypto world Ellison returns to looks vastly different from the one she left. When she reported to prison in late 2024, the industry was still recovering from the reputational crater left by FTX’s collapse. Bitcoin was trading around $75,620.

In the short 11 months she spent at Danbury, the market has staged a historic recovery. Bitcoin has surged nearly 67%, hitting a new all-time high of $126,080 during her incarceration. As of her release week, the asset is trading near $86,803, suggesting that the industry has largely moved on from the “crypto winter” she helped precipitate.

The Path Forward

Ellison is not the only high-profile crypto figure to see an early change in custody status. Heather Morgan, who is more popularly referred to as her stage name of “Razzlekhan,” was granted a release earlier than originally agreed to regarding her participation in the Bitfinex hack, which illustrates an increasing number of non-violent crypto criminals returning quickly to community supervision after serving their sentences.

Similarly, Ellison’s upcoming months will involve seeking job opportunities and adhering to strict curfews until the end of her federal obligation, with an anticipated full release date scheduled for the spring of 2026. Following this time, she could also be placed on probation for a period of time after closing out one of history’s most notable financial events.
