Subaru quietly dropped a bombshell over the holidays. While most people were busy with Christmas plans, the automaker posted a short teaser video on its Japanese social channels that strongly signals the return of the WRX STI. The full reveal is set for January 9, 2026, and all signs point to the Tokyo Auto Salon as the stage.

For enthusiasts who feared the STI badge might be gone for good, this teaser feels like a long-awaited confirmation. The icon isn’t just coming back. It’s coming back loudly.

A Short Teaser With Big Clues

The 12-second clip doesn’t waste time being subtle. It opens with a shadowy view of a blue WRX, but the STI badge on the grille is impossible to miss. That alone is enough to get fans talking. Look closer, and there’s more. The hood scoop appears noticeably larger than the one on the standard WRX, hinting at more aggressive cooling and performance intent.

The video cuts through quick, moody shots. A glimpse of the rear quarter panel shows familiar body cladding. Snow-covered trees briefly obscure the car, but Subaru lets the soundtrack do the talking. The unmistakable growl of a boxer four-cylinder climbs through the revs, reinforcing that this is very much an STI at heart.

The teaser ends with a blur of motion as the car blasts past the camera, followed by close-ups of the grille pattern and headlight. The final overhead shot confirms an important detail: the WRX STI is sticking with a sedan body style, at least for this reveal.

Built on the Current WRX Platform

This upcoming STI is clearly based on the current-generation WRX, rather than the hatchback concepts Subaru showed earlier this year. That matters, because it suggests this isn’t a distant concept or experimental project. It’s a near-production performance model built on an existing platform.

While Subaru hasn’t shared any specs yet, the visual cues and engine audio suggest a serious performance upgrade over the standard WRX. Whether that means more power, revised tuning, or drivetrain changes remains to be seen, but the intent is clear.

Hatchback Dreams, Sedan Reality

Back in October at the Tokyo auto show, Subaru reignited excitement by unveiling two STI concepts: the Performance-B STI and the Performance-E STI. Both revived the hatchback body style that disappeared after the 2021 model year, and both were positioned as testbeds for future powertrain ideas.

Subaru has said customer feedback on those concepts will help guide long-term decisions, especially around electrification. That process, however, won’t influence the STI debuting in January. This upcoming model is rooted firmly in the present WRX lineup.

What This Really Means

The WRX STI’s return signals more than just another performance sedan. It shows Subaru is listening to its most loyal audience. At a time when many brands are dialing back enthusiast cars, Subaru is doubling down on one of its most iconic nameplates.

January 9 can’t come soon enough.
