For years, Tesla has been the undisputed face of the electric vehicle revolution. That dominance is now under serious threat. China’s BYD is rapidly closing in, and by the numbers, it may already be the new benchmark for global EV sales.

According to a BBC report, BYD is on track to overtake Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles. The shift marks a turning point in the EV race, one where scale, manufacturing muscle, and global reach are starting to matter more than brand mythology.

The Sales Gap Is Growing

BYD said sales of its battery-electric cars rose nearly 28 per cent last year, crossing 2.25 million units worldwide. Tesla, meanwhile, published analyst estimates suggesting annual sales of around 1.65 million vehicles.

That difference isn’t marginal. It reflects how quickly BYD has moved from being a China-focused player to a global force, while Tesla’s growth has slowed in several mature markets.

India: Demand Strong, Prices Adjusted

In India, BYD is seeing enough demand to justify a price revision. The company announced a Rs 50,000 increase for the premium variant of its SEALION 7 electric SUV, effective January 1, 2026.

The SEALION 7 Premium will now be priced at Rs 49.4 lakh (ex-showroom), up from Rs 48.9 lakh. The Performance variant remains unchanged at Rs 54.9 lakh.

BYD said the move reflects rising input and operational costs, but stressed that the vehicle continues to offer strong value in the premium electric SUV segment. Since launch, more than 2,300 SEALION 7 units have been sold across India, pointing to a growing appetite for high-end EVs.

Why BYD’s Rise Looks Hard to Stop

Here’s the thing: BYD’s biggest advantage isn’t just technology. It’s scale.

China’s massive domestic market gives BYD volume that few global automakers can match. That scale allows the company to source batteries and components more cheaply, absorb cost pressures better, and stay aggressive on pricing.

While many automakers are still dependent on suppliers, BYD’s deep vertical integration gives it tighter control over costs and production timelines.

Building Factories, Not Just Exports

BYD’s overseas push is no longer limited to shipping cars out of China. The company has been investing heavily in local manufacturing to support its global ambitions.

A new plant in Brazil went live in 2025, strengthening its presence in Latin America. Its Thailand facility is set up to serve both local demand and export markets, including Europe.

To counter rising tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, BYD is also building production capacity in Hungary, a move that places manufacturing directly inside the European Union.

A New Phase for the EV Industry

What this really means is that the EV race is entering a new phase. Tesla is no longer racing alone at the front.

BYD’s combination of volume, cost control, and global manufacturing is reshaping the competitive landscape. The company’s rise signals a broader shift, where Chinese automakers are no longer just participants in the global EV market, they are setting the pace.
