White House Website Sparks Backlash on Fifth Anniversary of Capitol Riot
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

The Trump administration has ignited renewed controversy on the fifth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by launching a new government-hosted website that dramatically reframes the events of that day. The site, published on an official White House domain and promoted through government social media accounts, presents a sharply revisionist account that disputes the widely accepted characterization of the riot as an insurrection.

Instead, the website argues that Democrats were responsible for what it calls the “real insurrection,” asserting that the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory amounted to a coordinated abuse of power. The move has drawn swift criticism from lawmakers, historians, and civil rights advocates who say the administration is using federal platforms to rewrite history and downplay political violence.

Riot Recast as Patriotic Protest

One of the most contentious claims on the website is its portrayal of the thousands of Trump supporters who breached the Capitol as peaceful demonstrators acting out of patriotism. This description stands in stark contrast to extensive court records, video footage, and sworn testimony that document violent assaults on police officers, vandalism inside the Capitol building, and direct threats made against members of Congress.

By reframing the riot in this manner, the administration asserts that Democratic leaders deliberately distorted public perception by labeling the events an attempted coup. The site suggests that the term “insurrection” was strategically deployed to delegitimize Trump supporters and justify subsequent criminal prosecutions and congressional investigations.

Jan. 6 Committee Portrayed as Political Theater

The website places former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the House select committee that investigated January 6 at the center of its narrative. Pelosi’s image appears prominently on the site, accompanied by claims that the committee engineered a misleading public spectacle rather than conducting a legitimate inquiry.

According to the administration’s account, the committee selectively presented evidence, edited testimony, and shaped hearings to advance a predetermined political narrative aimed at blaming Trump alone for the violence. These allegations directly contradict the committee’s extensive documentation, which included thousands of witness interviews, internal communications, and public hearings broadcast nationwide.

Trump Reasserts Longstanding Grievances

President Trump reinforced many of the website’s claims during a speech marking the anniversary, arguing that his remarks on January 6, 2021, were misrepresented by the media. He again pointed to language in his speech urging supporters to protest peacefully, suggesting that this context was intentionally omitted in news coverage.

Trump also repeated assertions that Pelosi bore responsibility for security failures at the Capitol, including claims that additional National Guard troops were offered but not deployed. These allegations have circulated for years despite repeated findings that the Speaker of the House does not control Capitol security decisions.

Pelosi’s Office Rejects Narrative

Pelosi’s office responded by strongly disputing the administration’s claims, describing them as an attempt to sanitize a violent episode that left lasting scars on the nation’s democratic institutions. Her spokesperson emphasized that multiple independent reviews and fact-checking organizations have consistently rejected the idea that Pelosi was responsible for security planning on January 6.

The response also underscored that selective use of video clips or internal discussions does not alter the established chain of command governing Capitol security, nor does it erase the documented actions of the mob that forced lawmakers into hiding.

Law Enforcement Role Rewritten

The website has also drawn sharp criticism for its treatment of law enforcement. Rather than emphasizing the efforts of Capitol Police officers who defended lawmakers under extreme conditions, the site assigns them partial blame for the violence. This framing has angered police organizations and families of officers affected by the riot.

Nearly 140 officers from the Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department were injured during the attack, many suffering concussions, broken bones, and chemical burns. However, the administration’s timeline omits these injuries entirely and claims that no law enforcement officers died as a result of January 6.

Notably absent from the site is any mention of Officer Brian Sicknick, who collapsed after being pepper-sprayed during confrontations with rioters and died the following day. The site also fails to acknowledge four officers who later died by suicide after responding to the attack, a point previously highlighted by major national newspapers.

Pence and Election Claims Resurface

The website revisits long-standing disputes over the 2020 presidential election, once again asserting that the vote was stolen through widespread fraud. It criticizes former Vice President Mike Pence for certifying Biden’s electoral victory, portraying his actions as a betrayal rather than a constitutional duty.

These claims persist despite being rejected by dozens of courts, bipartisan election officials, and federal agencies that found no evidence of widespread fraud. Nevertheless, the administration argues that institutions across government, the judiciary, and the media deliberately ignored irregularities.

Democratic lawmakers featured on the website have dismissed it as propaganda rather than a serious historical account. Some have argued that the administration’s continued focus on January 6 reflects an inability to move past an event that remains central to Trump’s political legacy.

They point to the use of official government infrastructure to promote a partisan narrative as evidence of lingering insecurity over public perception of the riot and Trump’s role in it.
