OpenAI Eyes Record-Breaking $100 Billion Funding Round as Valuation Hits $850B

OpenAI is close to the initial stage of a funding round that is expected to raise over $100 billion, sources familiar with the matter said.

The funding will make the company one of the biggest private financing deals in history and will provide the firm with new funds to develop its artificial intelligence technology and the infrastructure that supports it.

The funding comes at a time when OpenAI is preparing for a period of heavy spending in computing, data centers, and specialized chips. Developing and maintaining modern AI models requires enormous computing resources and energy.

The company’s leaders think that in order to achieve long-term growth, the company needs to secure enough resources to develop larger models and provide reliable services to businesses and consumers.

Sources familiar with the matter said that the company’s total valuation, including the new funding, is expected to exceed $850 billion. This is higher than the previous estimate of around $830 billion. A source said that the company’s pre-money valuation will remain at $730 billion, and the new funds will increase the total value after the closing of the investment.

The first phase of the round is expected to rely heavily on strategic corporate investors. Companies linked to the discussions include major technology and investment firms that already play key roles in the AI supply chain.

These investors provide more than financial backing. They also offer cloud platforms, chips, and engineering partnerships that help scale AI systems.

If commitments reach the upper end of current discussions, contributions from these strategic partners could approach $100 billion.

Allocations are expected to be finalised by the end of the month, though people familiar with the process caution that terms remain under negotiation and could change before agreements are signed.

A second phase of fundraising is planned for later. That stage would include venture capital firms, sovereign wealth funds, and other institutional investors. Participants expect the total amount raised across both phases to grow beyond the initial commitments, though final figures remain unclear.

A $100B Strategic Pivot of OpenAI, Staged Investments, and the New Era of Infrastructure

According to reports, several corporate investors are set to contribute significant amounts of money in staged payments throughout the year. This will enable investors to diversify risks while ensuring that OpenAI continues to receive a constant flow of money as it develops its infrastructure projects.

Part of the investment is linked to commercial partnerships. One such partnership will see OpenAI boost its utilisation of a partner’s cloud computing infrastructure and AI chips.

These partnerships are a manifestation of a growing trend in the AI sector, where investment and collaboration are increasingly intertwined. Companies that invest money in AI development often get long-term guarantees of demand for their hardware or cloud computing infrastructure in the process.

Market reaction to the news has already been evident in open trading. The stock of one of the major investors has risen in response to news of the funding talks, indicating that investors believe there is strategic value in being more deeply involved in AI development.

The magnitude of the fundraising effort indicates just how costly advanced AI has become. The development of frontier AI models now requires massive arrays of specialized processors and dedicated data centers.

Infrastructure as the Engine of AI Supremacy

Running these systems also means that there are additional costs involved in the use of electricity, cooling, maintenance, and bandwidth. For companies that are competing at the highest level, it is essential to have access to both capital and hardware.

The move by OpenAI indicates that the technology industry is undergoing a shift. Currently, the development of AI does not depend on software innovation alone. To succeed, it is essential to have ownership of the infrastructure and the ability to make long-term commitments to supply. Companies that have computing resources at their disposal have a significant advantage in developing faster and more advanced models.

The agreement has not been concluded, and the parties involved have not commented on the matter. However, the scale of the proposed investment indicates that the major players in the technology industry are confident that AI will continue to be a major driver of growth in the future.

The proposed investment will help OpenAI to be more competitive in a market where access to computing resources is as important as research in determining progress. The move will also set a new standard for how the major technology companies invest in the next generation of artificial intelligence systems.
