Reddit Loses Trademark Battle Against Singapore Blockchain Startup Reddio

Reddit, the social media giant in the US, has been denied in their attempt to legally block a Singapore-based blockchain company from registering their trademark. On March 5th, 2026, Singapore’s Intellectual Property Office issued a full decision ruling that the name “Reddio” differed enough from “Reddit” so as not to confuse the consuming public on a daily basis based upon an independent adjudicator’s opinion. As a result of this significant decision, a local technology company can now move forward with using its chosen name and by extension allow the use of its product name.

The Core of the Legal Dispute

Instagram filed a formal objection to the trademark application on the grounds of similarity to their well known worldwide brand name. A statement submitted as part of their objection indicated that Instagram operates on a very large scale with numerous different subreddits. Instagram has also claimed that this competing company’s brand name infringed upon many of their registered trademarks. Specifically, Reddit took issue with the name itself and the startup’s stylized logo, aggressively suggesting that it encroached on the intellectual property of its iconic alien-head mascot.

Analyzing the Names and Logos

When the tribunal carefully examined the case, adjudicator Sim Junhui found that the two brands were fundamentally more different than they were alike. While the words share several identical letters at the beginning, the differing final letters completely change the overall visual impression. Furthermore, the tribunal noted clear phonetic differences. When spoken aloud, people typically pronounce “Reddit” with two distinct syllables, whereas “Reddio” naturally rolls off the tongue with three.

Aliens Versus Robots

Conceptually, the adjudicator determined that the two companies project completely different ideas to the public. The branding for Reddit is designed intentionally to create a playful, friendly alien-associated character and connect with the casual online social community and Internet culture. Reddio’s branding utilizes an abstract design resembling either a robotic face or modern-day radio to create an image of communication that is highly functional and technical, unlike Reddit’s image as a casual place to socialize. The tribunal determined that this design indicates Reddio to be a highly functional and technical communication tool, not a casual social hangout.

A Sophisticated Target Audience

Another contributing factor to the ruling was the narrow and distinct audience that each organization provides service to. Reddio is a new entity (incorporated in 2021) that provides a very timely specific type of software-based service to developers. The startup helps programmers build decentralized applications, seamlessly deploy smart contracts, and create digital assets like non-fungible tokens. Because Reddio’s core user base consists of highly sophisticated technology professionals, the adjudicator ruled there is a remarkably low chance these experts would ever mistakenly believe they were purchasing blockchain services from a social media message board.

Failing the Brand Recognition Test

Reddit has asserted that they have such a high level of popularity that operating Reddio would be harmful to both their Singaporean brand and their worldwide business. The tribunal held that while Reddit is a successful social media site with global popularity and local discussion, the evidence presented did not meet the high burden to prove that Reddit has localized brand dominance in the year Reddio originally submitted its trademark application (2021).

Having dismissed every ground of opposition, the adjudicator fully greenlit the Reddio trademark application to proceed to registration. To close out the case, Reddio was also awarded $11,726.50 to cover its legal costs. The media has reached out to Reddit to determine if the company intends to file a formal appeal against the decision.
