Audi Q9 Steps In as the New Flagship

TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Audi is shifting gears at the top end of its lineup. With the A8 sedan now phased out, the brand is preparing to crown a new flagship — and this time, it’s an SUV. The upcoming Audi Q9, already seen undergoing road tests, has now been officially acknowledged during Audi’s annual media briefing.

This isn’t just a bigger Q7. The Q9 is being developed as the most premium and spacious SUV Audi has ever built, marking a clear move toward where luxury demand is heading globally.

Designed Around Passenger Experience

The Q9 will offer both seven-seat and six-seat configurations, but the real focus is on what happens in the second row. The six-seat layout is expected to feature individual rear seats designed for maximum comfort, turning the cabin into a more lounge-like environment.

What this really signals is a shift in priorities. Audi is no longer designing its flagship purely for the driver. Instead, it’s leaning into chauffeur-driven luxury — the kind traditionally associated with high-end sedans like the A8.

Visually, the Q9 is expected to carry a strong road presence. Test models suggest a longer body, a more upright stance, and an enlarged version of Audi’s signature grille, giving it a commanding, almost imposing look.

Under the Skin: Power and Platform

While full specifications are still under wraps, the Q9 is likely to sit on an extended version of the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). This architecture will support a range of engines tailored to different markets.

At the top, the SQ9 variant is expected to pack a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering the kind of performance you’d expect from a flagship. Alongside that, more efficient powertrains, possibly including hybrid options, are likely to be part of the lineup.

In simple terms, Audi is aiming to combine performance with practicality, ensuring the Q9 feels just as capable on paper as it does on the road.

Targeting the World’s Biggest Markets

The Q9 has been designed with specific markets in mind. Audi is focusing heavily on the United States, China, and the Middle East — regions where demand for large luxury SUVs continues to grow.

That said, the SUV won’t be exclusive to those areas. It’s also expected to make its way to markets like the UK, ensuring it has a broad international footprint.

Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, has already described the Q9 as the new flagship of the brand, underlining its importance, especially in North America.

A Shared Future Within the Group

The Q9 will also play a role beyond Audi’s own lineup. It’s set to form the foundation for a future flagship SUV from Porsche, currently known internally as the K1. Both vehicles are expected to be produced at the Volkswagen Group’s facility in Bratislava, Slovakia.

This shared approach highlights how the group is streamlining development while still allowing each brand to maintain its own identity.

A Clear Shift in Luxury Thinking

Audi’s move says a lot about where the market is headed. Traditional luxury sedans are giving way to high-end SUVs that offer more space, flexibility, and presence.

The Q9 isn’t just filling the gap left by the A8. It represents a broader change in how luxury is defined, less about low-slung elegance, more about space, comfort, and commanding road presence.
