Technology is picking up a better pace, and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel recently made a big announcement regarding how they handle software development behind the scenes. In a recent podcast discussion, he revealed that two-thirds of all new code at Snap is now being generated by artificial intelligence, specifically using tools like Anthropic’s Claude. This is not very good news for all the engineers around the world who earned their specialization in the matter concerned, but it still shows remarkable progress in the field. Spiegel believes we are reaching a turning point where the primary challenge for tech companies is no longer the actual building of products, but rather how to distribute them! This means AI can be relied upon to a great extent to write code.

About Snap

Snap Inc. is the technology company most famous for creating Snapchat! This is the visual messaging app that pioneered disappearing photos and stories. It is interesting how this company identifies itself primarily as a camera company rather than just a social media platform. They focus heavily on augmented reality and hardware, along with a lot of other things, like their Spectacles glasses, to change how people interact with the world. Over the years, they have evolved from a simple chat app into a massive ecosystem involving original content, maps, and gaming, consistently pushing for innovation in their communication models, especially understanding what the younger generation wants.

Companies that have invested in AI coding for themselves

While it may sound surprising, Snap is definitely not alone in this, and almost every major tech player is now leaning on AI to handle their heavy coding tasks and management. Microsoft has been a leader here, with about 90% of Fortune 100 companies using its GitHub Copilot tool to help write and suggest code. Amazon is also known to have invested in it, recently revealing that its AWS teams use AI agents to automate complex software migrations that used to take months with manual work earlier. Even financial giants like JPMorgan Chase are using AI to streamline their massive internal systems. We can then safely say that the industry has shifted from developers writing every line by hand to engineers acting more like editors who oversee and refine AI-generated work.

How does it impact a Snap user?

For any Snapchat user, this shift mostly means faster updates and fewer bugs with enhanced features. Since AI handles the technical stuff, we can expect more features to be added soon. You will likely see more personalized tools, like smarter AI chatbots and advanced AR effects, which can be super exciting.
