Artificer Tiers are part of The Pit, one of Diablo 4’s toughest endgame activities. These tiers determine the difficulty level of enemies, the strength of bosses, and the quality of rewards you can earn. Higher tiers contain stronger monsters, but they also reward better Masterworking materials, more experience, and faster progression for late game builds.

The Pit was introduced to give experienced players a scalable challenge that continues after the campaign and leveling journey. Unlike standard dungeons, The Pit becomes increasingly difficult every time you clear a higher tier. Players pushing into advanced builds will eventually spend most of their time farming and climbing these Artificer Tiers.
If you want stronger gear and better upgrades, unlocking higher tiers is extremely important.
How to Unlock The Pit
Before you can access Artificer Tiers, you first need to unlock The Pit itself. This only becomes available once your character reaches the endgame phase.
Follow these steps to unlock it:
- Reach World Tier 4
- Complete a Tier 46 or higher Nightmare Dungeon
- Collect Runeshards from endgame activities
- Travel to Cerrigar in Scosglen
- Use the Artificer’s Obelisk to open The Pit
Runeshards can drop from several activities, including Helltides, Whispers, Legion Events, Nightmare Dungeons, and other endgame content. Once you gather enough Runeshards, you can activate the Obelisk and enter The Pit for the first time.
Completing your first successful run also unlocks Masterworking at the Blacksmith.
How Artificer Tiers Work
Each Artificer Tier increases enemy power and dungeon difficulty. The higher you climb, the more dangerous enemies become. Elite packs hit harder, bosses gain more health, and survival becomes far more demanding.
Inside The Pit, your goal is simple. Kill enough enemies to fill the progress bar before the timer expires. After the bar is full, a boss portal appears. Defeating the boss within the time limit completes the tier successfully.
Every completed run unlocks additional tiers. However, the speed of your clear matters greatly.
Here is how tier progression works:
- Finishing with less than four minutes remaining unlocks one new tier
- Finishing with four to six minutes remaining unlocks two tiers
- Finishing with more than six minutes remaining unlocks three or more tiers depending on the season balance
Fast clears help players skip tiers and reach difficult levels much faster.
Best Ways to Push Higher Artificer Tiers
Many players hit a wall after climbing several tiers. Enemy scaling becomes aggressive, and weak builds struggle heavily. If you want to progress efficiently, your character build and gear optimization matter far more than raw level alone.
Focus on these important areas:
- Upgrade your gear through Masterworking
- Improve resistances and armor before pushing higher tiers
- Use optimized Paragon Boards
- Level your Glyphs consistently
- Prioritize survivability over pure damage
- Learn boss attack patterns carefully
Mobility also matters more than many players expect. Faster movement allows quicker clears and helps avoid deadly attacks during boss fights.
Another important strategy is farming tiers you can clear consistently instead of pushing impossible difficulties repeatedly. Efficient farming often gives better rewards over time than constant failed attempts.
Rewards for Unlocking Higher Artificer Tiers
The main reason players grind Artificer Tiers is the reward system. Higher tiers provide better Masterworking materials that are necessary for upgrading endgame gear.
These materials are divided into different brackets:
- Obducite for lower Masterworking ranks
- Ingolith for mid level upgrades
- Neathiron for advanced Masterworking ranks
As you progress, higher tiers also improve loot quality and efficiency. Stronger players can farm resources faster while preparing for even more difficult content later.
For many Diablo 4 players, climbing Artificer Tiers becomes the true endgame experience. It tests build strength, mechanical skill, and efficiency at the same time. If you continue improving your gear, refining your build, and learning enemy mechanics, you will steadily unlock higher tiers and dominate The Pit with confidence.
