Many players reach Gerudo Town in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and quickly discover that entering the city is not as simple as walking through the front gate. Unlike other settlements in Hyrule, Gerudo Town follows strict traditions that prevent men from entering. Since Link is turned away immediately, players must find another way inside.

Why Can’t You Enter Gerudo Town?
Gerudo Town is located deep inside the Gerudo Desert and serves as the home of the Gerudo people. According to their customs, only women are allowed to enter the city. Men, known as “voe” by the Gerudo, are forbidden from entering.
Because Link is male, the guards stationed outside the entrance refuse to let him pass. No amount of fighting, climbing, or story progress changes this rule. To gain access, you must find a disguise.
Reach Gerudo Town First
Before obtaining the required outfit, you should travel to Gerudo Town itself. Once you arrive at the entrance, speak with the people near the gate. You will learn rumors about someone who discovered a way to enter the city despite the restrictions.
This information points you toward Kara Kara Bazaar.
Travel To Kara Kara Bazaar
Kara Kara Bazaar is located northeast of Gerudo Town and acts as a trading post in the middle of the desert. If you followed the road leading into the desert, you likely passed through the area already.
Once you reach the bazaar, climb to the top of the main building. There, you will encounter a mysterious individual named Vilia.
At first glance, Vilia appears to be a Gerudo woman. However, after speaking with the character, Link realizes that Vilia has also found a way to bypass the city’s rules.
Buy The Gerudo Outfit
After a short conversation, Vilia offers to sell Link a complete disguise. The outfit costs 600 Rupees and contains three pieces:
- Gerudo Veil
- Gerudo Top
- Gerudo Sirwal
Buying the entire set automatically equips Link with the clothing. Besides allowing access to Gerudo Town, the outfit also provides heat resistance, which is extremely useful while exploring the harsh desert environment.
If you do not have enough Rupees, consider earning money by:
- Selling gemstones and ore.
- Hunting animals and selling cooked meals.
- Defeating enemies and collecting valuable materials.
- Completing side quests throughout Hyrule.
After gathering 600 Rupees, return to Vilia and purchase the set.
Wear The Outfit And Return To Gerudo Town
With the Gerudo Outfit equipped, head back to Gerudo Town. This time, the guards will allow Link to enter without any trouble.
Once inside, you gain access to:
- Shops and merchants.
- Side quests.
- Shrines and important locations.
- The chief of Gerudo Town, Riju.
- Main story missions connected to Divine Beast Vah Naboris.
Entering the city marks a major step in progressing through The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Can You Enter Gerudo Town Without The Outfit?
Under normal gameplay, the answer is no. The Gerudo Outfit is required to enter the city for the first time. While some glitches and unusual methods have been discovered by speedrunners and experienced players, these techniques are not intended and are unnecessary for regular play.
The outfit remains the easiest and most reliable method.
Benefits Of The Gerudo Outfit
The disguise provides more than access to the city. It also offers several advantages:
- Grants heat resistance during daytime exploration.
- Makes desert travel much easier.
- Allows story progression in the Gerudo region.
- Unlocks access to shops and side activities.
- Adds one of the most memorable moments in the game.
Because of these benefits, purchasing the outfit is worthwhile even after completing the Gerudo storyline.
