India and UAE Hold Talks on BrahMos Missile Deal as Defence Ties Deepen

India is in discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over a potential defence deal involving the export of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akashteer air defence system, according to sources cited by Reuters. If finalized, the agreement would mark another major milestone in India’s efforts to expand defence exports and strengthen strategic partnerships in the Middle East.

The talks are currently at an early stage but are reportedly progressing quickly. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the UAE has expressed interest in multiple Indian-made defence platforms as it seeks to enhance its military capabilities amid rising geopolitical uncertainty in the region. Recent tensions in the Middle East and concerns surrounding maritime security have prompted several Gulf nations to modernize their defence infrastructure.

BrahMos is among India’s most advanced weapon systems and is jointly developed by India and Russia. The missile can be launched from land, sea, and air platforms and is regarded as one of the fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles in the world. Akashteer, meanwhile, is an automated air defence command and control system developed by Bharat Electronics in collaboration with the Indian Army. It is designed to coordinate air defence operations and improve response times against aerial threats.

Potential Deal Could Expand India’s Defence Export Footprint:

India has been aggressively promoting defence exports as part of its broader strategy to develop a self-reliant military-industrial base. Over the past few years, New Delhi has secured several international orders for BrahMos missiles, including exports to the Philippines. The country has also signed a BrahMos supply agreement with Vietnam and is reportedly in advanced discussions with Indonesia.

Should the UAE proceed with the purchase, it would become another significant international customer for India’s flagship missile system. The proposed deal would further strengthen India’s position as an emerging exporter of sophisticated military equipment.

Experts note that defence exports have become an increasingly important component of India’s strategic and economic objectives. Government efforts to boost domestic manufacturing have led to greater investment in research, production facilities, and export-oriented defence programs.

Industry observers believe that successful exports of systems such as BrahMos enhance India’s credibility in the global defence market and open opportunities for future sales across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Strategic Partnership Between India and UAE Continues to Grow:

The discussions also reflect the growing strategic partnership between India and the UAE. In recent years, the two countries have expanded cooperation across defence, energy, trade, technology, and investment sectors.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE earlier this year, both nations agreed on a framework for deeper defence cooperation and collaboration in advanced technologies. The agreement included commitments to strengthen defence industrial partnerships, maritime security cooperation, cyber defence initiatives, and information sharing.

Regional analysts suggest that the UAE’s interest in Indian defence systems aligns with its broader effort to diversify military procurement sources while maintaining strong relationships with global partners. Such diversification has become increasingly important as countries seek greater flexibility in managing defence requirements.

Before any BrahMos export to the UAE can be finalized, India would need approval from Russia because of the missile’s joint development structure. However, sources indicated that Russian approval is not expected to be a major obstacle given Moscow’s close ties with Abu Dhabi.

Defence Industry Closely Watches Outcome of Negotiations:

The reported discussions have attracted significant attention from defence analysts and industry stakeholders.

As negotiations continue, the potential BrahMos and Akashteer deal underscores India’s growing influence in the global defence market. A successful agreement with the UAE would not only boost defence exports but also deepen strategic ties between two countries that have steadily expanded cooperation across multiple sectors in recent years.
