Three Harvard Dropouts Who Slept On Floors Now Run A $10.3 Billion AI Chip Company After Etched's Record Series C

Etched, the AI chip startup founded by three Harvard dropouts in 2022, has closed a $300 million Series C funding round at a $10.3 billion valuation. The round was announced on July 23, 2026 and was led by Sequoia, with Andreessen Horowitz, SK Hynix, Jane Street, and Diffusion Capital also participating, along with other earlier investors. Other backers of the company include Peter Thiel, Andrej Karpathy, Dylan Field and Amjad Masad.

Etched was previously valued at $5 billion when it received a $500 million round in December, implying that it had more than doubled its price in the last seven months. The company claims that this is the biggest valuation ever for a Sequoia-led Series C. That milestone, the highest Sequoia Series C valuation in history, puts Etched in exclusive company for a startup that is less than four years old and has yet to ship chips on a commercial scale.

The Transformer Bet And Why Going Narrow Is The Entire Strategy:

Etched’s founding concept represents one of the most concentrated bets in the chip business. When co-founders Gavin Uberti, Chris Zhu, and Robert Wachen left Harvard in 2022, they made a single architectural bet: transformer models, the architecture that supports GPT, Claude, Gemini, and nearly every major commercial AI system, would continue to dominate the AI landscape for the foreseeable future. Every subsequent choice taken by the corporation is based on that gamble.

Etched creates specialized chips for transformer-based AI models with an emphasis on inference, which is the portion of AI that takes place after a question is typed. The majority of chip manufacturers create all-purpose processors that are capable of handling any task. Etched took a different route. Etched promises far greater performance per watt and per dollar for inference workloads than Nvidia’s general-purpose GPUs by building hardware that does one thing exceptionally well rather than many things adequately.

Last month, Etched announced that it had successfully manufactured its homegrown chips, that its first full systems were being tested by clients, and it had already booked $1 billion worth of orders. The company now employs 400 people and recently opened an 80,000-square-foot facility near its San Jose, California headquarters to expand production and prototyping.

“Etched, founded by three Harvard dropouts, raises $300M at $10.3B valuation highest ever for a Sequoia-led Series C. The AI chip startup has $1 billion in orders, 400 employees, and a new 80,000-sq-ft facility. Peter Thiel, Andrej Karpathy and Dylan Field are among its backers.”~TechCrunch

The Founding Story Behind Etched: From Sleeping On Floors To $10 Billion

The human story behind Etched is as striking as the valuation. Wachen remembers landing in the Bay Area after telling his parents he was leaving school to do a startup, with no office or apartment arranged. He slept on the floor of a friend’s unfurnished house. “I remember staying in my friend’s house that they were about to sell, using a towel as a blanket,” he laughs.

The company started with a $5.4 million seed round in March 2023 at a $34 million valuation, a figure that makes the Series C valuation of $10.3 billion represent a roughly 300x appreciation in just over three years. That trajectory, while extraordinary, reflects both genuine product progress and the extraordinary premium the market is placing on credible Nvidia alternatives.

CEO Uberti has been candid about the existential nature of the wager: “This company is a little bit of a bet. If transformers go away, our company will die. But if they stick around, we’re going to be one of the biggest companies of all time.”

Among those who have tested the hardware firsthand are Anthropic’s Andrej Karpathy, OpenAI’s Noam Brown, and Geoffrey Hinton, and Wachen says they “are very excited about it.”

“We’ve raised $300M at a $10.3B valuation, led by Sequoia Capital alongside Andreessen Horowitz, Jane Street, Diffusion, Argo, and SK Hynix. This is the highest valuation ever for a Sequoia-led Series C. And we’re just getting started.”~Gavin Uberti

The Road Ahead: Scale, Delivery, And The Nvidia Moat That Still Needs Cracking

Wachen is realistic about what comes next, telling TechCrunch that the company “had no idea how hard it was going to be” and that they still need to be “humbled by what it will take to actually get to scale.”

The challenge Etched faces goes beyond manufacturing. Nvidia has built an ecosystem that stretches far beyond silicon, combining hardware, networking, software, and developer tools that have become deeply embedded across cloud providers and enterprise AI platforms. Breaking into that market requires more than building a faster chip. New entrants must convince customers to rewrite workflows, validate new hardware, and trust an alternative supplier for mission-critical AI infrastructure.

Etched said demand for its AI inference systems continues to outpace supply as customers move from evaluation to deployment. The company will use Series C proceeds to expand production capacity and accelerate customer deployments translating the $1 billion in orders already booked into actual shipped hardware. Whether it can do so at the pace and reliability that enterprise customers require will determine whether Etched’s $10.3 billion valuation reflects the future it is building toward, or the risk it is still navigating through.
