Do you believe everything you see on the internet? Well, sometimes we all do. But it is always important to verify the information to make out what the facts are. So, let’s jump in and see some ways in which we can verify the information online.

Ways to verify information online

If you want to verify and check the information available online, then these are the ways that you can follow.

  • Jump pages. Instead of staying on a single page to decide if it feels trustworthy, open new browser tabs and research the source, author, or the mentioned claims independently across the web. Sometimes the internet challenges its own answers when asked.
  • Take a picture. Running an image through Google Images reveals if a graphic was taken out of context, recycled from an older story, or digitally altered using editing software or AI generation. It also takes you straight to where the picture belongs and how it works.
  • Locating the original source of quotes or data points prevents unnecessary confusion. You can follow links back to peer-reviewed studies, primary research papers, and official web pages that would help you jump back in and verify it for you.
  • Checking and tallying the news with different news pages, particularly on X and the official media handles, would help us verify the claims.
  • Inspecting website web addresses carefully helps identify malicious or deceptive sites. Impostor, or rather fake, domains are often known for using slight typos or unusual domain extensions like .co or .su to clone reputable media platforms and trick readers into trusting misinformation.
  • If you are in a hurry and can’t check every claim manually, try utilizing dedicated, fact-checking platforms like Snopes, PolitiFact, or Reuters Fact Check. They are some pages that provide quick clarity on widely circulating rumors, viral social media posts, and misleading headlines that have already been thoroughly investigated.
  • Analyzing tone, language, and emotional triggers offers a strong signal regarding credibility. Content that is loud and explicitly designed to provoke intense outrage, panic, or fear often uses clickbait tactics to bypass logical thinking and encourage rapid, unverified shares.
  • This is a must if it is a major news article. It means that checking the publication date stops old stories from masquerading as current events. Outdated news recycled during fresh political or social events can mislead readers about current situations even if the original report was factually accurate years ago. This overlap becomes clear when one does this.
