Steps to unprivate a Twitter/X account
If you want your X account to be a public one now, here is all you need to do.
- Open the Twitter or X app on your mobile device, or just go to the website on your computer browser.
- Here, you have to tap on your profile picture in the left corner if you are using mobile, and you can even click on the More option with three dots on the left navigation bar on the desktop if that’s what you’re using.
- Now select Settings and Support from the menu, then tap or click on Settings and privacy. Here, we have to pick Privacy and safety from the list of options.
- Tap or click on Audience and tagging near the top of the menu.
- It comes with checking and fixing the setting labeled Protect your posts and toggling the switch off so it is no longer highlighted. If you are using a web browser, you may see a prompt asking you to confirm your choice to make sure you’re certain about it. You must click on it if you’ve made up your mind.
With this done, you have officially made your account public on X, and other people can find you there without having to send you requests.
Do the past private posts also become public after this?
This is a tricky thing which usually throws people off. But yes, every single post you created while your account was private becomes completely public the moment you toggle off post protection. Twitter, or X as we call it now, does not keep two separate categories for private and public posts on the same account. The privacy settings are changed for the entire account and are not tied to a few specific posts that you can privatize. For that reason, once turned off, your complete account history opens up, allowing anyone to scroll back, view, search, repost, or tweet your older posts. If you have old posts you would rather keep hidden from the public, your best bet is to delete them before your account goes public. Otherwise, you can simply see what you want and do accordingly.
