Audi has officially stepped into the full-size luxury SUV arena with the unveiling of the all-new 2027 Audi Q9, a model designed to sit above the Q7 and become the brand’s flagship vehicle. Alongside the performance-focused SQ9, the new three-row SUV marks Audi’s strongest challenge yet to rivals such as the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover.

Built with North American buyers in mind, the Q9 reflects growing demand for larger premium SUVs, a segment that continues to outperform traditional luxury sedans. In fact, the new SUV now takes over the flagship role previously held by the A8 sedan, highlighting how buyer preferences have shifted over the past decade.

Developed with American buyers at its core

Audi says the United States played a central role in the development of the Q9. According to the company, demand from dealers across North America was one of the biggest reasons for expanding its SUV lineup.

The SUV will be manufactured at Audi’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia, with North America expected to account for roughly two-thirds of total production.

Dimensionally, the Q9 is significantly larger than the outgoing Q7. Measuring over 209 inches in length, it offers a noticeably longer wheelbase and additional height, translating into improved cabin space across all three rows.

A cleaner design with high-tech lighting

Instead of relying on sharp character lines, Audi has opted for a cleaner and more refined exterior design. Smooth body panels, an upright stance and a larger grille give the Q9 a commanding road presence while maintaining the brand’s understated design language.

Lighting remains one of Audi’s biggest strengths. The SUV features Matrix LED headlights capable of selectively dimming individual LEDs to reduce glare for oncoming traffic. At the rear, curved OLED taillights can display different lighting signatures, while illuminated Audi logos and ground-projected turn signals add another layer of sophistication.

These features not only improve visibility but also reinforce Audi’s focus on combining technology with design.

V6 power for Q9, V8 muscle for SQ9

Under the hood, Audi is offering two petrol-powered options for the U.S. market.

The standard Q9 is powered by a turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 engine producing 429 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive, the SUV is capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in just under five seconds.

Buyers seeking greater performance can opt for the SQ9, which packs a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 generating 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Audi claims the high-performance SUV can complete the same sprint in only 3.8 seconds.

Both models also offer a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds, making them practical choices for families with recreational trailers or boats.

Luxury-focused cabin with premium technology

Inside, the Q9 is designed to deliver comfort for all occupants. Buyers can choose between a traditional seven-seat layout or an optional six-seat configuration featuring captain’s chairs in the second row.

Every seat is power-adjustable, while heated front sports seats come standard. Higher trims add ventilation, massage functions and premium upholstery. Audi has also equipped the SUV with multiple child-seat anchor points across both rear rows, making it more family-friendly.

Technology plays an equally important role. The dashboard houses a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, an 11.9-inch digital driver display and a dedicated 12.3-inch passenger screen. The Android-based infotainment system supports third-party apps, Amazon Alexa integration and advanced voice controls.

Music lovers can opt for a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen 4D audio system that uses vibrating seat elements and headrest speakers to create an immersive listening experience.

Comfort, capability and advanced driving features

The Q9 rides on adaptive air suspension capable of adjusting ride height depending on driving conditions. Ground clearance can increase to nearly 10 inches for rough roads, while available four-wheel steering improves both low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.

Multiple drive modes allow drivers to tailor suspension settings, steering feel, throttle response and power delivery based on road conditions or driving style.

Pricing and launch timeline

Audi will launch the Q9 in North America before introducing it in other global markets, an unusual move for the German automaker.

The standard Q9 starts at $89,095, with Premium Plus and Prestige trims priced at $94,695 and $103,795, respectively. The performance-oriented SQ9 will be offered in a single trim level starting at $119,395.

With a spacious cabin, powerful engine lineup, cutting-edge technology and a clear focus on luxury, the 2027 Audi Q9 positions itself as Audi’s most ambitious SUV yet. As demand for premium three-row SUVs continues to rise, the Q9 could become one of the brand’s most important launches in recent years.
