Bumble is making a major change to one of the defining features that helped establish its identity in the dating-app industry. The company is now allowing men to make the first move in heterosexual matches, effectively moving away from the strict version of the rule that required women to initiate conversations.

The change represents a significant shift for Bumble, which built its brand around giving women greater control over dating interactions. When the platform launched, its most recognizable feature was its requirement that women send the first message after a heterosexual match. The model was designed to create a different experience from traditional dating apps, where men typically initiated conversations.

Now, Bumble is giving users more flexibility over who starts a conversation.

Under the updated approach, men can send the first message in eligible heterosexual matches. Women can still choose to initiate conversations, but they are no longer required to do so in every situation. The change gives both people greater control over how a match develops.

Bumble is also changing the amount of time users have to respond to messages. Instead of the previous 24-hour window, users will now have up to 72 hours to respond to a first message.

The extended deadline could make the dating experience less stressful for people who do not regularly check dating apps. Under the previous system, a match could disappear if the required interaction did not happen within a single day. The new three-day window gives users considerably more time to decide whether they want to respond.

The changes come as dating apps face increasing pressure to adapt to changing user expectations. While online dating has become a mainstream way for people to meet potential partners, users have also complained about dating-app fatigue, repetitive conversations, excessive notifications and the pressure to remain constantly active.

Bumble’s original approach was created partly in response to those concerns. By requiring women to start conversations, the company positioned itself as an alternative to conventional dating platforms. The idea was that women would have greater control over who contacted them, potentially reducing unwanted messages and creating a more comfortable environment for starting relationships.

That concept became central to Bumble’s identity and marketing. The company’s name itself became associated with the idea of women taking control of the dating process.

However, the dating landscape has changed considerably since Bumble first became popular. People now use multiple platforms simultaneously and have become more accustomed to personalized features and greater control over their online interactions.

The decision to allow men to initiate conversations could therefore be viewed as an attempt to make Bumble more flexible and competitive. Rather than requiring every match to follow the same communication pattern, the platform is giving users more freedom to decide how they want to interact.

For men, the change removes one of the most significant restrictions associated with using Bumble. Previously, matching with someone did not necessarily mean they could immediately start a conversation. They had to wait for the woman to send the opening message.

That waiting period could sometimes lead to matches expiring without any conversation taking place. Under the new approach, men have an opportunity to start the interaction themselves.

For women, meanwhile, the change provides another choice rather than completely removing the original philosophy. Women who enjoy making the first move can continue doing so, while those who prefer to wait for the other person to begin can now have that option.

The 72-hour response period could also change the pace of conversations. Dating apps have traditionally encouraged frequent engagement through notifications, match deadlines and disappearing connections. Extending the response period may reduce some of that urgency.

A longer window can be especially useful for people with demanding work schedules, travel commitments or limited time for dating apps. Instead of feeling that they need to respond immediately, users can return to a match when they are ready.

At the same time, Bumble will need to determine whether the new rules improve the quality of conversations. More flexibility can increase the number of conversations that begin, but it does not necessarily guarantee that those conversations will become meaningful relationships.

The company is therefore balancing two objectives: making the platform easier and more appealing to use while preserving the features that distinguish it from competitors.

Bumble’s decision also reflects a wider evolution in the dating-app industry. Platforms are increasingly experimenting with different communication formats, artificial intelligence features, personalized recommendations and new ways to encourage meaningful interactions.

The days of a single defining feature being enough to differentiate a dating platform are becoming more difficult as competition increases. Users can easily move between apps depending on which experience they prefer.

For Bumble, changing its signature rule could therefore be an important attempt to modernize the platform without abandoning its broader focus on giving users more control.

The move could also reshape perceptions of Bumble. For years, the platform was known primarily as the dating app where women had to make the first move. That distinction helped it stand out, but it also created a limitation that some potential users may have found inconvenient.

Bumble won't require women to make the first move on its app anymore

By allowing men to initiate conversations, Bumble is effectively moving toward a more conventional model while retaining the option for women to take the lead.

The 72-hour response period reinforces that shift by making the platform less dependent on strict deadlines. Together, the changes create a dating experience in which users have more time and more freedom to decide how a match progresses.

Ultimately, Bumble is betting that flexibility will be more valuable to today’s dating-app users than a rigid communication rule. After years of making its first-message policy a defining part of its identity, the company is now taking a different approach: giving both sides more freedom to make the first move and giving matches more time to turn into conversations.

Whether the changes will improve user satisfaction and engagement remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Bumble’s signature rule is no longer as restrictive as it once was, marking a significant new chapter for the dating platform.
