GTA VI Leak Turns Into a Protest Over Digital Game Ownership

After nearly 13 years of waiting, Rockstar Games has finally given fans a much closer look at what could be the biggest video game release of the decade. The latest Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay footage offered an extended 26-minute glimpse into Vice City, introducing players to its world, characters, activities and surprisingly detailed gameplay mechanics.

Released on August 27 through an exclusive Netflix livestream before being uploaded to YouTube, the footage was captured entirely in-game on the PlayStation 5. And while GTA VI’s story has already been surrounded by leaks and rumours, the official footage still managed to leave fans impressed.

Meet Jason and Lucia

At the centre of GTA VI are Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple whose relationship appears to be one of the game’s biggest story elements. The pair have a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style dynamic, with their lives revolving around crime, money and survival in Vice City.

Players will be able to switch between Jason and Lucia seamlessly, including during certain action sequences. The trailer showed how switching characters can become particularly useful during shootouts and police chases.

Their relationship also appears to evolve depending on what happens throughout the game. Players can influence how the two characters interact, while a wide range of customisation options will allow them to change their appearances.

Vice City Is Bigger and More Alive

GTA VI returns players to Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami, but this time the city appears significantly more detailed and dynamic.

The gameplay footage showed everything from busy streets and beaches to clubs, gyms and the Florida-inspired Everglades. Players can drive cars, ride jet skis, go kayaking and even travel through the wetlands on a fanboat.

Driving also appears to have received a major overhaul. The minimap resembles a genuine GPS navigation system, while vehicles and police chases appear more responsive than ever.

In one sequence, players could switch between Jason and Lucia during a car chase, deciding whether one character should drive while the other shoots at pursuing police officers.

There Is Much More to Do Than Commit Crimes

Despite GTA’s reputation for chaos and crime, Rockstar appears determined to make its world feel like a genuine place to live in.

The extended footage showed Jason and Lucia participating in activities including parachuting, swimming, clubbing and working out at the gym. Characters can also eat, use their phones and communicate through text messages.

These seemingly ordinary activities could make Vice City feel far more interactive than previous GTA games.

NPCs Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

One of the most noticeable improvements is the behaviour of pedestrians and other non-playable characters.

NPCs appear to react more naturally to their surroundings, with the footage showing people riding scooters, exercising and going about their daily routines. Even during chaotic driving sequences, vehicles appeared to avoid pedestrians rather than simply treating them as obstacles.

Rockstar also appears to be expanding its interaction system. In one memorable scene, players could pet a dog and potentially earn points through an apparent honour-based system.

Even the wanted system seems more sophisticated, with factors such as the vehicle being driven and a character’s appearance potentially influencing how easily police can identify them.

Leaks Couldn’t Steal the Spotlight

The official gameplay reveal arrived amid another difficult chapter in GTA VI’s development. Recent leaks and alleged story spoilers attributed to the hacker group Cyberleek had already circulated online.

Rockstar described the leaks as “heartbreaking” for the team and said they were not how the company wanted fans to experience the game after such a long wait.

Still, the official footage appears to have restored much of the excitement. Fans have particularly praised the game’s visual detail, character animations and controls, with some comparisons being drawn to Red Dead Redemption 2.

What We Still Don’t Know

Despite the massive gameplay reveal, Rockstar is still keeping plenty of GTA VI under wraps. Details about its radio stations, complete music lineup, combat damage system and several other gameplay mechanics remain unknown.

That mystery is likely to keep the speculation machine running until launch.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. After more than a decade of waiting, the final countdown to Vice City has officially begun.
