Zomato is tightening the rules for restaurants on its food delivery platform, and this time, the focus is on what goes into the food rather than how quickly it reaches your doorstep.

The company has introduced a zero-tolerance policy against the sale of dishes containing analogue dairy products by restaurants listed on its platform in India. Under the new policy, Zomato has already started delisting dishes that restaurant partners have declared as containing analogue dairy.

The move is aimed at giving customers greater transparency about the ingredients in their food while encouraging restaurants to use natural dairy products.

What Is Zomato’s New Policy?

Under the new rules, restaurants must take immediate corrective action if they are using analogue dairy in dishes listed on Zomato. Their primary option is to switch to natural dairy products.

If restaurants cannot make the switch immediately, they will be required to remove dishes containing analogue dairy from their Zomato menus.

Zomato has also placed greater responsibility on restaurant partners to verify what actually goes into their food. Restaurants must check product labels and ingredient declarations supplied by manufacturers and suppliers before listing dishes on the platform.

This means restaurants cannot simply rely on assumptions about the products they purchase. They are expected to ensure that the ingredients being used match the descriptions presented to customers.

Why Does Analogue Dairy Matter?

Analogue dairy products are designed to imitate certain properties of conventional dairy ingredients but can contain non-dairy fats or other substitutes. They may be used by food businesses as alternatives to traditional dairy ingredients because of cost, availability or functional characteristics.

For consumers, however, the distinction can be important.

Someone ordering a dish expecting it to contain conventional dairy may want to know if an alternative ingredient has been used instead. Greater disclosure can therefore help customers make more informed decisions about what they eat.

Zomato’s latest policy puts the responsibility on restaurants to make that distinction clear.

Restaurants Could Face Delisting

The new rules come with a significant consequence for restaurants that fail to comply.

Zomato said restaurants that continue to violate the policy can be removed from the platform. For businesses that depend heavily on online food delivery for customer acquisition and orders, losing their Zomato listing could have a meaningful impact.

The company is therefore asking restaurants to review their menus, inspect ingredient labels and make necessary changes rather than waiting for complaints or enforcement action.

The policy also creates an additional layer of accountability between restaurants, suppliers and customers. If a restaurant lists a dish on Zomato, it must ensure that the description accurately represents what is ultimately being served.

Zomato Pushes for Greater Food Transparency

Aditya Mangla, CEO of Zomato, said the company’s mission of “better food for more people” also involves protecting customer health and maintaining clear standards for food listed on the platform.

The company described the new policy as part of its broader effort to promote healthier choices and greater transparency for consumers. It also said the move is consistent with applicable regulatory requirements.

For Zomato, this represents a shift beyond simply connecting customers with restaurants. As food delivery platforms become an increasingly important part of India’s food ecosystem, they are also gaining greater influence over how restaurants present their products to consumers.

A New Compliance Challenge for Restaurants

Zomato’s zero-tolerance approach could force restaurant partners to take a closer look at their supply chains and menu descriptions. Ingredients that may have previously gone unnoticed could now become a compliance issue.

For customers, meanwhile, the policy could mean more clarity about what they are actually ordering.

Zomato was launched in 2010 with the mission of “better food for more people” and has grown from a restaurant discovery service into a major food ordering and delivery platform.

With its latest move, the company is making one thing clear: what restaurants serve matters just as much as what they promise on the menu.
