Armored Mewtwo is one of the rarest special forms in Pokémon GO. Unlike regular Mewtwo, this version wears the heavy armor seen in Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution. It has only appeared during limited-time events, so Trainers cannot simply find it in the wild or evolve a normal Mewtwo into this form.
The good news is that Armored Mewtwo returned to Pokémon GO during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale. It appeared in five-star raids on September 5 and September 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time. This was its first appearance since 2020. Its rarity also makes each return especially important for collectors, particularly newer players who never had access to its previous limited raid appearances.
How To Get Armored Mewtwo
During its 2026 return, the main way to obtain Armored Mewtwo was by defeating it in a five-star Raid Battle. After winning the raid, Trainers received Premier Balls and a chance to catch the Pokémon.
The process was straightforward:
- Find a five-star raid featuring Armored Mewtwo.
- Join the raid with enough other Trainers to defeat it.
- Use strong counters and take advantage of your team’s damage bonus.
- Defeat Armored Mewtwo before the raid timer expires.
- Use the Premier Balls awarded after the battle to attempt the catch.
Armored Mewtwo was available during both days of the Mega Finale, giving players multiple opportunities to raid it. However, the event has now ended, so it is not currently obtainable through that event.
Can You Catch Armored Mewtwo In The Wild?
No. Armored Mewtwo is not a wild encounter. It is a special event form that has been distributed through limited-time Raid Battles. This means walking around, using Incense, or visiting PokéStops will not normally produce an Armored Mewtwo encounter.
There is also no evolution method. You cannot evolve Mewtwo into Armored Mewtwo, and Armored Mewtwo cannot be obtained by changing the form of a regular Mewtwo.
What Makes Armored Mewtwo Different?
Armored Mewtwo is more than a cosmetic version of the Legendary Pokémon. Its battle performance differs from regular Mewtwo because its stats and available moves are different. Armored Mewtwo has much higher defensive strength but gives up some of Mewtwo’s impressive attacking power.
Its available attacks include Confusion and Iron Tail as Fast Attacks, while its Charged Attacks include Rock Slide, Dynamic Punch, Earthquake, Future Sight, and Psystrike.
Another important detail is that Armored Mewtwo cannot Mega Evolve. This makes it a distinct collectible rather than another route to Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
Is Shiny Armored Mewtwo Available?
No. Shiny Armored Mewtwo was not available during the September 2026 return. Therefore, completing raids during that event could only result in the standard Armored Mewtwo appearance.
Trainers should also be careful with claims about guaranteed shiny encounters or special evolution items. There is no legitimate item that can turn a normal Mewtwo into its armored form.
What If You Missed The Event?
If you missed the September 2026 raids, you cannot currently obtain Armored Mewtwo through the normal gameplay methods available after the event. Pokémon GO has previously brought the form back after a long gap, however, so another return remains possible.
The best approach is to watch future Pokémon GO event announcements and raid rotations. Since Armored Mewtwo is a limited event Pokémon, its next appearance could be tied to a special celebration rather than a regular weekly raid schedule.
For Trainers who already own one, trading can also be worth considering if another player is willing to part with theirs. A trade is subject to Pokémon GO’s normal trading requirements and costs, so it is not a simple replacement for a future raid appearance.
