Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is making a major push into the next frontier of artificial intelligence with its planned acquisition of World Labs, the AI startup co-founded by prominent researcher Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock transaction, valued at $8.2 billion, is expected to give AMD access to technology focused on spatial intelligence, an emerging area of AI designed to help machines understand and interact with the physical world.
The deal marks a significant expansion of AMD’s ambitions beyond conventional AI workloads. While the chipmaker has been competing aggressively in the market for processors used to train and run generative AI models, World Labs’ technology could help it build a stronger position in applications involving robotics, simulation, autonomous systems and other physical environments.

Why Spatial Intelligence Matters for AI
Much of today’s AI development revolves around understanding text, images, audio and video. Spatial intelligence takes that capability a step further by enabling AI systems to build models of three-dimensional environments and reason about how objects interact within them.
That could become increasingly important as AI moves from software-based applications into the physical world. Robots, autonomous machines and industrial systems need more than the ability to recognise an object. They need to understand where that object is, how it can move and what could happen when it interacts with its surroundings.
World Labs has been developing technology aimed at precisely this challenge. Its research seeks to help AI systems understand and simulate physical environments, potentially opening applications across robotics, product design, engineering and virtual simulation.

Fei-Fei Li Brings Major AI Expertise to AMD
Fei-Fei Li, one of the most prominent researchers in computer vision, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist once the transaction closes. She will report directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su.
Li has played an influential role in the development of computer vision and AI research, and her involvement gives the acquisition significance beyond World Labs’ technology itself. Her research background could help AMD understand how AI is evolving as systems become increasingly capable of processing and reasoning about complex environments.
Li said World Labs’ relationship with AMD began with a technical partnership focused on model training and inference optimisation using AMD GPUs.
According to Li, the collaboration eventually demonstrated that combining the companies’ hardware, software, foundation models and applications could create a natural fit.
World Labs had already attracted substantial investor interest before the acquisition. Earlier this year, the startup raised $1 billion in funding in a round that included an investment from AMD.
AMD Looks Beyond AI Chips
AMD has been positioning itself as one of the major challengers in the rapidly expanding AI computing market. Its GPUs are increasingly being used for AI training and inference, but the World Labs acquisition suggests the company is also interested in understanding the applications that will drive future demand for computing infrastructure.
AMD said World Labs’ research could provide deeper insights into emerging AI workloads and help influence its technology roadmaps across hardware, software and complete systems.

That is particularly relevant as AI companies and chipmakers look beyond today’s large language models. Future AI systems could require very different types of computing power if they need to continuously process spatial information, simulate environments or control physical machines.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. If completed, World Labs will become an important part of AMD’s broader AI strategy, while Li’s appointment could strengthen the company’s research capabilities as the industry moves toward AI systems designed not just to process information, but to understand the physical world around them.
