McDonald’s is reportedly using artificial intelligence to help determine how much customers may be willing to pay for its food, introducing a data-driven approach that could make the price of the same burger vary from one restaurant to another.

The fast-food giant has been developing technology that analyses customer behaviour, local market conditions and purchasing patterns to recommend prices for individual restaurants. One of the factors considered by the system is “customer willingness to pay,” meaning the algorithm attempts to estimate how sensitive customers in a particular location are to changes in price.

The development marks another step in the growing use of artificial intelligence in the retail and food industries. While dynamic pricing is already used in sectors such as airlines, hotels and ride-hailing, its application to everyday fast food has generated concerns about transparency and whether customers could end up paying different prices for identical products simply because they visit different locations.

AI Could Recommend Different Prices for the Same Burger

The pricing system reportedly works by assessing conditions specific to individual McDonald’s restaurants. Rather than relying solely on a single national price, the technology can consider local demand, customer purchasing behaviour and other market information before generating recommendations for restaurant operators.

This means that two McDonald’s restaurants located only a short distance apart could potentially receive different pricing recommendations.

For customers, the change could make menu prices increasingly dependent on location. A burger that costs a certain amount at one restaurant may be more expensive at another, even if both locations operate under the same brand.

The system does not necessarily mean that McDonald’s automatically changes prices every time a customer approaches a restaurant. Instead, the AI is reportedly designed to provide recommendations that restaurant operators can use when making pricing decisions.

McDonald’s has maintained that franchisees ultimately retain control over the prices they charge. However, the growing reliance on algorithm-generated recommendations has raised questions about how much influence the technology has over those decisions.

The Technology Estimates Customer Price Sensitivity

One of the most notable aspects of the system is its attempt to estimate how much customers in a particular area are willing to pay.

An area where customers are considered less sensitive to price could receive recommendations for higher prices, while restaurants serving more price-sensitive customers could receive different recommendations.

The concept is similar to personalised pricing strategies used by other industries, although the McDonald’s system reportedly operates at the restaurant level rather than necessarily creating an individually customised price for every customer.

For businesses, such technology can potentially help identify prices that maximise revenue without significantly reducing demand. Instead of relying entirely on managers to determine prices based on experience, algorithms can process large amounts of transaction and market data in a short period.

However, the approach also raises questions about fairness. Customers may not know why the price of a particular item is higher at one restaurant than another, particularly when the differences are based on information gathered and analysed by an algorithm.

Franchisees Remain Part of the Process

McDonald’s restaurants in the United States are operated through a combination of company-owned locations and franchisees. This structure makes pricing decisions more complicated because individual operators have their own costs, customers and local market conditions.

The AI pricing platform is reportedly intended to assist these operators by giving them data-based recommendations.

But reports about the system have also highlighted tensions between franchisees and corporate management. Some operators have expressed concerns about the extent to which they are expected to follow recommendations generated through McDonald’s technology.

The distinction between a recommendation and an instruction is therefore becoming important. While the company says franchisees can make their own decisions, operators may still feel pressure to follow corporate pricing strategies, particularly when their performance is evaluated against company expectations.

The debate also reflects a broader question about the role of algorithms in businesses where independent operators compete within the same brand network.

An $18 Big Mac Recommendation Sparked Attention

The issue gained additional attention after an unusually high pricing recommendation involving a Big Mac meal reportedly emerged.

A recommendation approaching $18 for a Big Mac meal became an example of the potential extremes of algorithm-driven pricing. The figure attracted public criticism because it highlighted how far a computer-generated recommendation could move away from what customers traditionally associate with affordable fast food.

Although such recommendations do not necessarily mean that every McDonald’s restaurant will charge those prices, the incident demonstrated the potential consequences of relying heavily on automated pricing models.

It also raised questions about whether algorithms can accurately understand the emotional and reputational impact of price increases. A system may identify a price as financially optimal based on historical purchasing data, but customers may respond negatively if they believe a familiar product has become unreasonably expensive.

Growing Questions Around AI Pricing

The development comes at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly integrated into everyday business decisions.

Companies are using AI to predict demand, manage inventories, recommend products, personalise advertising and optimise staffing. Pricing is another area where businesses see an opportunity to use data to improve efficiency and revenue.

For McDonald’s, a sophisticated pricing system could allow individual restaurants to respond more quickly to changes in demand and local economic conditions. It could also help franchisees understand how customers respond to price changes instead of relying solely on traditional trial-and-error methods.

At the same time, the approach could make pricing less predictable for consumers. Customers are accustomed to seeing prices displayed on menus, but dynamic or locally optimised pricing could make those prices increasingly different from one location to another.

The technology also raises broader questions about how much consumers should know about the factors influencing prices. If an algorithm determines that customers in one neighbourhood are more willing to pay for a burger, should those customers be informed?

For now, McDonald’s appears to be positioning its AI technology as a tool for restaurant operators rather than an automatic system that independently sets prices. Nevertheless, its growing role in pricing reflects a significant change in how one of the world’s largest fast-food chains approaches its menus.

As AI becomes more deeply embedded in pricing decisions, the McDonald’s experiment could become part of a much larger debate over convenience, competition, transparency and the role of algorithms in determining what consumers pay for everyday products.
