Mr Iyer, seventy-one, couldn’t wait to see his daughter in Toronto. Policy bought, tickets printed, tablets packed in a neat little pouch. Then, in week two, a bout of chest discomfort landed him in hospital. And the family found out, the hard way, that his plan handled his heart condition very differently from what they’d imagined. It’s a story that plays out more often than you’d think.

Why Parents Need Cover That Fits Them

Older travellers aren’t careless; they simply see doctors more often, and hospital stays tend to run longer. Insurers know it. So, plenty of travel insurance plans change their terms once you cross a certain birthday, even when the brochure looks identical to the one handed to a thirty-year-old.

That’s why price shouldn’t be your first question. Ask what shifts after sixty. Some plans trim benefits, others add conditions, and a few won’t sell to anyone above a set age. Better to learn this at the buying stage than at a hospital desk.

The Big One: Existing Health Conditions

Blood pressure. Diabetes. A dodgy thyroid. Knees that have seen better days. Most parents have something on that list, and this is exactly where plans get picky. Some exclude such conditions altogether; others pay only when there’s a sudden emergency, not for everyday management.

So read that clause slowly. Does the plan cover a flare-up? Is there a lower cap? And please, declare everything on the form, even the tablet you think is trivial. A missing detail can sink a claim at the very moment the family needs it most.

Small Caps Hidden Inside a Big Number

A large sum insured feels safe. Yet tucked inside it, you’ll often find smaller ceilings for room rent, doctor’s fees, ambulance rides or dental work. Seniors get admitted more often, so they hit those ceilings sooner.

Going somewhere with pricey hospitals? Check these limits before paying. A generous headline figure with a low room cap can still leave you covering the difference. Go through the benefit table line by line, and phone the insurer about anything that isn’t clear.

Is the Sum Insured Enough for the Destination?

Hospital bills in North America and parts of Europe can shock even well-prepared families. If the cover is set too low, one serious illness may eat through it, and the rest comes out of your own pocket.

So choose the amount by destination, not by budget. When you shop for international travel insurance for parents flying to the US, Canada or Western Europe, lean towards a higher sum insured. A little extra now beats a giant bill later. Ask yourself where your parents are most likely to need care, and plan around that country.

Waiting Periods and Co-Payments

Two terms catch people off guard. A waiting period means some benefits don’t start for a few days after the policy begins. A co-payment means your parent pays a fixed share of every claim, even for covered treatment. Senior plans often have both.

They live in the policy schedule, usually in small print, so go hunting. If your mother is flying next week, a waiting period could leave her unprotected for certain illnesses in the early days. Buy well ahead and the gap disappears.

Hospitals, Cashless Access and Language Trouble

Many plans offer cashless treatment, but only at partner hospitals. If the nearest one isn’t on the list, your parent may have to pay first and claim later. That’s a lot to ask of someone elderly, alone in a foreign city.

Language adds another layer. Doctors may not speak English, and consent forms can be bewildering. Write the helpline number in big print, save it on their phone and tuck a copy in their wallet. The assistance team can often talk to the hospital on their behalf. Smaller towns may have fewer partner hospitals, so check the map before you book.

What Plans Often Leave Out

Routine check-ups, regular medicines, planned operations and wellness treatments usually aren’t covered. Some plans also exclude adventure activities, and the definition can surprise you. A gentle trek counts in certain policies. Heading on a pilgrimage or a long cruise? Ask first.

Other common exclusions include mental health care and long-term problems. Yes, reading the exclusions list is dull. But it tells you what the plan won’t do, and that’s just as useful as knowing what it will.

Before You Buy

Compare two or three plans. Read the senior-specific terms. Declare every condition honestly, and make sure your parents’ phones carry the policy details. Send a copy to a sibling or relative at home too.

Buying cover for your parents is an act of care, and a bit of homework belongs to it. Give the fine print an hour of your time (far less than a hotel search takes), and they’ll head off with something better than a policy: a calmer mind.
