The AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) exam assesses your understanding of AI concepts and how to integrate AI services to solve business problems. Compared to other entry-level IT exams, the AIF-C01 exam focuses on practical applications as opposed to definitions. For the minimum passing score of 700 out of 1,000, you must show the ability to analyze business problems and identify the best AI or ML service to solve the problem.

You will encounter scenario based questions in which AWS will ask you to perform a task that a cloud professional may perform in the scope of their work. You will come across 65 questions, and the majority of the questions will require you to analyze a business case. Understanding trade-offs associated with performance, cost, and other factors, as well as ethical implications of AI services, will help you answer the questions. Answering scenario questions will test your critical thinking and analytical skills. You must have a deep understanding of real world case studies to succeed on this exam.

What Does a Real AIF-C01 Question Look Like? Step by Step Recommendation Example

Preparing for the AIF-C01 Exam by memorizing definitions doesn’t work for most exams but it really doesn’t work for this one. Many hopeful test takers expect questions as simple as “What is an LLM?” or “What does NLP stand for?”

Questions like that do exist but they’re in Domain 1 (Fundamentals of AI and ML and are few and far between. You should expect questions asking for higher-level thought and critical analysis, more along the lines of Domain 5 (Designing AI and ML Architectures).

An example might be:

A retail organization wants to create a web application that can recommend items to retail customers based on their past purchase history. The organization has no data scientists or machine learning engineers, and would like to provide this recommendation system as quickly as possible. What is the best AWS service to help accomplish this requirement?”

Questions like the ones on the actual exam require understanding how the different services, offerings, and limits of the cloud allow you to answer the question. For example, you would immediately eliminate Amazon SageMaker, as it requires some customer provisioning and configuring, and focuses on more of the foundational engineering tasks, which is not what the question is asking. You’d be led to believe the solution would focus more on Amazon Personalize.

Why Do Flashcards Stop Working Halfway Through AIF-C01 Exam Preparation?

Flashcards don’t really help with the AIF-C01 Exam.

Domain 1 (20%) which tests you on things like supervised vs. unsupervised learning, is mostly straight forward and memorization-based. Things break down quickly. However with things like foundation models in Domain 3 (28%) and the privacy and security of AI in Domain 4 (14%).

With foundation models simply remembering the definition of tasks like text summarization is not enough. You need to know the correct metric to evaluate these models such as ROUGE for summarization. whereas BLEU is typically used for machine translation.

Domain 4 requires an understanding of ethical and secure AI principles. For example, you may need to evaluate whether measurement bias is present in the training data. Many questions ask you to assess provided scenarios using responsible AI practices. Rote memorization is of little use for these domains.

How Can You Tell Which AWS Service an AIF-C01 Exam Question Is Really Asking For?

The AWS scenario questions are designed in a way to frame one option as the best, and suggest reasons to eliminate other options. Successfully answering a scenario question requires identifying the key business constraints.

Some common business constraints are:

  • Time and Effort: Prefer a managed service over a flexible service. Phrases like “Fully managed service” or “deploy machine learning model in the quickest way” suggest use of a managed machine learning service like Amazon Comprehend or Amazon Rekognition over a machine learning service like Amazon SageMaker. Similar, but using a service instead of a machine learning model suggests use of Amazon SageMaker. Likewise use of a phrase like “without machine learning experience”, suggests use of Amazon Comprehend, or Amazon Rekognition.
  • Customization: Suggests use of Amazon SageMaker. For example “build a customer churn prediction model” or “build a customer segmentation model”
  • Privacy: For example, if the question states “to block customers from uploading pictures containing sensitive information to a public cloud”, it suggests a combination of an Amazon Bedrock feature and AWS Security service like Amazon Macie.

Another useful technique is to read the last statement of the question first.

Once you identify the main element of the question, reading the rest of the statement helps identify the business constraints.

Which AWS AI Service Solves Which Problem? A Quick Reference for AIF-C01 Exam

Success on scenario questions depends on having a clear mental model associating AWS services to their most common use cases. AI services, in particular, are often offered as alternatives on scenario questions and knowing which service is most closely related to the scenario described in the question is critical to answering correctly.

These associations will be helpful during the scenario questions:

AWS Service Primary Use Case for AIF-C01 Scenarios
Amazon Bedrock Generative AI, accessing multiple foundation models via an API, text generation, and image generation.
Amazon SageMaker Building, training, and deploying custom machine learning models using proprietary data.
Amazon Rekognition Image or video analysis, facial recognition, object detection, and visual content moderation.
Amazon Comprehend Natural language processing (NLP), extracting sentiment, entities, or key phrases from text.
Amazon Lex Building conversational interfaces, intelligent chatbots, and voice agents.
Amazon Personalize Generating individualized product, content, or marketing recommendations based on user behavior.

What Happens If You Get Only One of Two Answers Right on the AIF-C01 Exam?

The AIF-C01 exam has two styles of questions. multiple-choice and multiple responses. Multiple choice asks for a single correct answer out of four choices. Multiple response questions require you to choose two or more correct answers out of five choices.

Partial credit is not awarded by AWS and therefore if a question asks you to pick two answers. You will get no credit if you answer that question by picking one correct and one incorrect answer. This format makes multiple-response questions the most difficult and dangerous questions on the exam.

In order to successfully answer multiple response questions you will need to rely on the process of elimination. In a multiple choice question if you are able to eliminate two choices as answers, then you will need to choose the correct answer from the three choices that remain. In each of the three choices, look at business constraints to see if an incorrect choice is an AWS service that addresses a similar question to the one asked in the question.

Can You Really Finish 65 AIF-C01 Questions in 90 Minutes?

Time management is a key skill for the AIF-C01. You have to answer 65 questions, 50 of which are scored, in 90 minutes. This means you have to answer each question, on average, in less than 1 minute and 20 seconds.

There are evaluation (or “trivia”) questions, which take less time to read and answer. There are also scenario questions which take more time to read and answer as they are longer and more detailed. You may not be able to answer scenario questions completely, but you should be able to make an informed guess. Use the testing software’s “Flag for Review” feature, and continue with the exam.

Ultimately, your goal is to answer every question at least once and use remaining time to review flagged items. Sometimes a later question can offer clues that help you solve an earlier, flagged question.

Is Studying the Services Enough or Do You Need Timed AIF-C01 Practice?

The nature of AWS AIF-C01 scenario questions means that you can only really learn how best to answer them by answering lots of examples. While video tutorials and whitepapers can be useful in gaining AWS knowledge, the real challenge is applying that knowledge within a tight time limit.

What Should You Have Sorted Out Before You Book the AIF-C01 Exam?

Overall, the AIF-C01 practice exams available at Pass4Success are excellent. Their Amazon practice exams give an excellent preview of the format, length and difficulty of the official AWS exams. Passing through their sample questions will help you become more comfortable with the distractors and the business constraints you will see during your exam. In order to adequately prepare to take the AIF-C01 exam, you should become familiar with all the sample questions and answers available, and learn to spot the constraints, appreciate the length of the exam, and provide yourself ample time to take the official exam. Good luck!
