OpenAI to Limit Weapons Information for Teens on ChatGPT in Violence-Prevention Push
OpenAI is introducing stricter restrictions on weapons-related information available to teenagers using ChatGPT as part of a broader effort to prevent real-world violence. The new safeguards aim to limit access to practical details about weapons and security systems that could potentially be misused.
The changes come as artificial intelligence companies face increasing scrutiny over chatbot safety and their responsibility to protect younger users.
Under the updated rules, ChatGPT will restrict teenagers from accessing practical information about weapons, equipment and security systems that could facilitate violent activities. The company is also strengthening restrictions on conversations involving mass attacks. These measures will limit detailed discussions about weapons used in attacks, how perpetrators obtained them and comparisons that could increase their notoriety.

OpenAI is also introducing additional measures to identify potentially dangerous conversations. ChatGPT may automatically end discussions when users appear fixated on violence or seriously harming others. Repeated incidents could result in temporary account suspensions.
The company has further strengthened its age-prediction technology, which uses behavioural signals to identify users who may be under 18. Parents with linked accounts may also receive notifications if their teenager’s account is suspended following repeated violence-related discussions.
OpenAI has also disclosed that it made more than 200 referrals to law enforcement authorities during the third quarter of 2026 concerning potential threats of violence.
The company plans to publish its first Community Safety Report in early 2027, covering the second half of 2026, with updates every six months.
The new safeguards are expected to roll out over the coming weeks. However, teenagers will still be able to use ChatGPT for educational purposes, violence prevention, de-escalation guidance and seeking support from trusted adults.
The initiative reflects OpenAI’s broader effort to balance access to AI technology with stronger protections against its potential misuse, particularly among younger users.
Binance Seeks to Shore Up Confidence After Record $6.3 Billion Heist
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is working to restore customer confidence following a reported $6.3 billion security breach that has raised concerns about the safety of digital assets and exchange infrastructure.
The incident reportedly involved unauthorised withdrawals from the platform’s internet-connected hot wallets. Initial investigations suggested that attackers exploited weaknesses in transaction approval systems to execute withdrawals. The breach has prompted Binance to review its internal security controls and strengthen protections against future attacks.
The company has pledged to cover customer losses using its corporate funds, emphasising that users should not bear the financial consequences of the incident. Binance is also coordinating with law enforcement agencies, blockchain security specialists and other cryptocurrency companies to trace and recover the stolen assets.
As part of its recovery efforts, the exchange is working with industry partners to identify suspicious transactions and freeze affected funds wherever possible. Cooperation with cryptocurrency issuers and other trading platforms is expected to play an important role in limiting the movement of stolen digital assets.
Binance is also considering additional transparency measures, including updated proof-of-reserves disclosures and a detailed technical investigation into the breach. These steps are intended to reassure customers about the company’s financial position and demonstrate improvements in its security infrastructure.

The incident has renewed discussions about the vulnerabilities associated with centralised cryptocurrency exchanges. Despite advances in blockchain security, exchanges remain potential targets for sophisticated cybercriminal operations.
For Binance, the immediate challenge extends beyond recovering funds. The company must demonstrate that its systems can protect customer assets and prevent similar incidents.
The reported $6.3 billion breach could have wider implications for the cryptocurrency industry, potentially encouraging exchanges to strengthen cybersecurity investments, improve transaction monitoring and introduce stricter internal controls. Restoring confidence will depend on Binance’s ability to provide transparency and deliver lasting security improvements.
Meta Settles With Teen During Trial Testing Claims Social Media Caused Depression, Eating Disorders
Meta has settled a lawsuit with an 18-year-old woman who accused the company of designing social media features that encouraged addictive usage and contributed to depression, eating disorders and other mental health problems. The settlement came after jury selection had begun in a closely watched trial in Los Angeles.
The lawsuit alleged that platforms such as Instagram and Facebook deliberately used features including infinite scrolling, autoplay and personalised content recommendations to keep teenagers engaged for extended periods. The plaintiffs argued that repeated exposure to these features contributed to compulsive social media use and negatively affected their mental health.
The 18-year-old plaintiff, identified as K.D.B., alleged that her experiences on Instagram contributed to psychological and physical health challenges. Meta agreed to settle her claims, although the financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Meta had previously reached a settlement with another plaintiff, identified as S.J., an Illinois teenager. Both plaintiffs had also settled their claims against TikTok and YouTube.
Following the latest agreement, Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, remains the only defendant involved in the ongoing trial.
Meta has rejected allegations that its platforms were intentionally designed to make teenagers addicted. The company has maintained that it has introduced several safety measures to protect younger users and provide parents with greater control over their children’s online experiences.
The lawsuit forms part of thousands of legal claims against social media companies across the United States concerning their impact on young people’s mental health.
The case could have wider implications for the technology industry, particularly as regulators, parents and lawmakers increasingly examine how social media platforms are designed and marketed to younger audiences.
The settlement adds to mounting legal pressure on technology companies to address concerns surrounding platform accountability, youth safety and the psychological effects of prolonged social media use.
Reddit Shares Plunge as Google’s AI Search Squeezes Traffic
Reddit shares plunged nearly 30% on October 30 after the social media platform warned that Google’s artificial intelligence-powered search features were reducing referral traffic and creating challenges for future user growth.
The sharp decline followed Reddit’s third-quarter earnings report, which highlighted growing concerns about its dependence on search engines to attract new visitors. The company’s shares fell approximately 29%, putting significant pressure on its market valuation.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman revealed that search engine referrals had declined by more than one million visits per week on average during October. The company also warned that daily active unique visitors could experience a low double-digit percentage decline in the fourth quarter if the trend continues.
The growing adoption of Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode is changing how people discover information online. Instead of visiting individual websites, users can increasingly receive AI-generated answers directly within search results. This reduces the need to click through to platforms such as Reddit, which have traditionally benefited from organic search traffic.

Despite these concerns, Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, representing 53% year-over-year growth. Adjusted earnings also exceeded analyst expectations. However, its fourth-quarter revenue forecast disappointed investors, adding to concerns about the company’s growth outlook.
To address declining referrals, Reddit plans to focus more heavily on logged-in users and encourage greater adoption of its mobile application. The company is also exploring measures that could require accounts to access certain content in selected international markets.
Reddit is additionally investing in personalisation and user retention to reduce its dependence on external search platforms.
The development highlights a growing challenge for digital businesses as AI-powered search changes internet traffic patterns. For Reddit, maintaining audience engagement and attracting new users without relying heavily on Google will be critical to its long-term growth.
