How Can Your Digital Medical History Help You Pick Which Plan Covers Pre-existing Diseases?

Your digital medical history helps you pick which plan covers pre-existing diseases because it keeps every diagnosis, report and prescription in one place. That lets you compare plans using facts, not memory.

Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), your ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) links your health records from hospitals and labs, and you decide who can see them. A complete record shows which of your conditions count as pre-existing and helps you check how each plan treats them. It also backs you up at claim time, when the insurer wants to know when an illness started.

What Is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission?

ABDM is the government’s effort to build a digital health system that you control. Here’s what it gives you.

  • ABHA number: A 14-digit health ID that links your health records across hospitals, labs and health programmes.
  • ABHA address: A simple username, like yourname@abdm, that you use to share and access your records.
  • ABHA app: Your lab reports, prescriptions and diagnoses are stored here, so you can see your history in one place.
  • Consent control: Nobody can see your records without your permission. You choose who sees them, what they see and for how long, and you can take that permission back.

Why Your Medical History Decides Which Plan Fits

In health insurance, the way a plan handles your existing conditions matters as much as the premium.

IRDAI rules treat a condition as pre-existing if a doctor diagnosed or treated it in the 36 months before your policy starts. Diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems and asthma are common examples. Plans can make you wait up to 36 months before they cover these conditions, and some plans have shorter waiting periods.

If you forget an old diagnosis, two things can go wrong. You may pick a plan with a long waiting period for exactly the condition you have. Or you may leave it off the proposal form, and a claim gets questioned later. A digital record makes both mistakes less likely.

How to Use Your Digital Records to Compare Plans

Your records are most useful before you buy. Use them in this order.

  1. Pull up your history: Open the ABHA app and go through your reports and prescriptions from the last few years.
  2. List every condition with a date: Write down when each was diagnosed and what medicines you take.
  3. Check each plan against that list: Look at the waiting period for pre-existing diseases, any limits on specific illnesses and any co-payment.
  4. Disclose everything: When you buy online health insurance, fill in the proposal form from your list, not from memory.

Some plans let you shorten the waiting period for an extra premium. Your list helps you decide whether that’s worth paying for.

Why It Matters Even More for Your Parents

Older family members usually have more conditions, and their records are often spread across several clinics and paper files.

Help your parents create their own ABHA and link their records before you compare health insurance plans for parents. With their full history in front of you, you can see which conditions will face a waiting period and how co-payment terms will affect their claims. You can then pick a plan based on what they actually need, not just the premium.

How Digital Records Help at Claim Time

Claims for pre-existing conditions often get stuck on one question: when did this condition start?

In June 2023, IRDAI asked insurers to start collecting the ABHA numbers of people seeking cover and to obtain their consent to share medical records through ABHA.

The National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX), built under ABDM by the National Health Authority with IRDAI, aims to standardise how hospitals and insurers exchange claim information. When your records are digital and dated, it’s easier to show that you disclosed a condition and that its waiting period is over.

Also, once your policy has run for 60 months without a break, the insurer can’t dispute a claim because something wasn’t disclosed, unless fraud is proven.

What Digital Records Can’t Do

Digital records are a tool, not a shortcut. Keep these limits in mind.

  • They don’t replace reading the policy wording on waiting periods and exclusions.
  • Not every hospital or lab is linked to ABDM yet, so you may need to upload older paper reports yourself.
  • Only share your records with an insurer when it’s needed, and check the consent screen before you approve.

Conclusion

Your digital medical history makes it easier to pick which plan covers pre-existing diseases. You can see your conditions clearly, compare waiting periods properly and disclose everything honestly. Set up your ABHA, link your records and use them before you buy. Your claims will move more smoothly later.
