FASTag Annual Pass Price to Increase to ₹3,075 From April for Private Vehicle Owners

Starting April 1, the FASTag yearly pass for private vehicles will cost ₹3,075. The pass currently costs ₹3,000, and the change reflects a tiny 2.5 percent rise in annual rate. The annual pass is part of the FASTag-based electronic toll collection system that is utilized on national highways throughout India. The pass, which was introduced to improve highway travel and minimize congestion at toll plazas, allows private vehicle owners to cross several tolls without having to pay separately for each trip.

Once purchased, the annual pass allows vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans to cross up to 200 toll plazas on national highways and expressways without additional toll payments. The pass remains valid for one year or until the 200-trip limit is reached, whichever happens earlier. Officials say the price revision is part of routine adjustments to the toll collection framework. Despite the increase, the scheme continues to offer a convenient option for regular highway users who frequently travel across toll plazas.

How the FASTag Annual Pass Works for Highway Users:

The FASTag annual pass is linked directly to the FASTag account attached to a vehicle. Once the pass is activated, toll charges are not deducted from the FASTag balance until the user either completes 200 trips or the one-year validity period expires. This system simplifies toll payments and eliminates the need for drivers to repeatedly recharge their FASTag accounts for every trip. Instead, users pay a single annual fee that covers multiple journeys on eligible highways.

The pass is designed specifically for non-commercial private vehicles. Commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses are not eligible for this facility. Additionally, the pass is tied to a particular vehicle and cannot be transferred to another car or FASTag account. Travelers can activate the pass digitally through official platforms such as the Rajmargyatra mobile application or designated government portals. Once payment is completed and eligibility is verified, the pass is typically activated within a few hours and becomes operational for toll crossings. The government introduced this system to make toll payments faster and more efficient, particularly for frequent travelers who regularly drive across national highways.

Scheme Introduced to Simplify Toll Payments:

The FASTag annual pass scheme was launched in August 2025 as part of efforts by the government to streamline toll collection and reduce congestion at toll booths. The system relies on electronic toll collection technology that automatically deducts charges from a prepaid FASTag account attached to a vehicle’s windshield.

With the annual pass, frequent travelers no longer have to pay toll fees at each crossing. Instead, a one-time payment allows multiple trips without additional deductions. This is particularly useful for commuters who travel regularly on highways connecting nearby cities or industrial corridors.

The system also supports the broader goal of digitalizing toll payments across India’s highway network. Electronic toll collection reduces waiting time at plazas, improves traffic flow and lowers fuel consumption caused by long queues of vehicles. The annual pass also benefits highway authorities because it encourages the use of digital payment infrastructure and reduces the need for manual toll collection processes.

Benefits and Limitations for Drivers:

For many private vehicle owners, the FASTag annual pass offers cost savings and convenience, especially for those who frequently travel through toll plazas. By paying the annual fee, drivers can avoid multiple toll deductions and enjoy smoother highway travel.

Experts say the effective toll cost per trip under the annual pass is significantly lower compared with regular toll payments. For users who travel often, the scheme can reduce travel expenses and provide predictable costs throughout the year. However, the pass is not valid on all roads. It applies mainly to toll plazas on national highways and expressways managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Roads and toll plazas managed by state governments or local authorities may not be covered under the scheme. Drivers should also note that the pass becomes inactive once the 200-trip limit is reached. After that point, toll fees are again deducted from the FASTag balance in the usual way unless the pass is renewed for another year.

Despite these limitations, the annual pass has been widely welcomed by regular highway commuters. The upcoming price increase to ₹3,075 is relatively small and is unlikely to significantly affect demand for the pass among frequent travelers. As highway traffic continues to grow and digital tolling becomes the norm, initiatives such as the FASTag annual pass are expected to play an important role in making road travel faster, more convenient and more predictable for millions of drivers across India.
