After years of speculation surrounding the future of the aging CX-3, Mazda has officially confirmed that an all-new generation of its compact SUV will arrive in 2027. The announcement marks a major step in the company’s evolving SUV strategy, especially as demand for electrified and affordable urban SUVs continues to rise globally.

The current CX-3 has been around for more than a decade, first launching in 2015. Despite its age, the model continues to perform strongly in markets like Australia, where it remains one of the best-selling light SUVs.

Mazda confirmed the next-generation model during its latest financial results presentation, revealing that the new CX-3 will continue to be built in Thailand. The factory will also serve as a key export hub for Japan and ASEAN markets.

Hybrid Technology Expected for the New Model

While Mazda stopped short of revealing full technical details, the company previously hinted that the upcoming compact SUV would include electrified powertrains. Industry expectations strongly point toward a hybrid version joining the line-up for the first time.

This move aligns with Mazda’s broader push toward electrification while still maintaining its reputation for driver-focused vehicles. The hybrid CX-3 is expected to compete directly with rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Stonic.

Mazda has also invested heavily in its Thailand operations, reportedly committing billions toward future electrified vehicle production. That investment now appears closely tied to the next-generation CX-3 program.

Fresh Styling Inspired by Mazda’s New SUVs

The upcoming CX-3 is expected to adopt Mazda’s latest design language, seen on newer SUVs such as the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-30.

Early design sketches shown earlier this year hinted at a more mature and athletic appearance, featuring slimmer lighting elements, a wider grille, and cleaner body surfacing. The interior is also likely to receive a major overhaul with larger digital displays, upgraded materials, and enhanced connectivity features.

There is still uncertainty about the platform underpinning the new SUV. Mazda may either evolve the existing architecture or shift the CX-3 onto a smaller version of the platform currently used by the Mazda3 and CX-30.

Australia Remains a Key Market

Australia continues to be one of the CX-3’s strongest markets globally. More than 4,400 units have already been sold there in 2026, helping the SUV retain its position as the country’s top-selling light SUV.

Mazda Australia has repeatedly confirmed its commitment to the compact model range, even as larger SUVs like the Mazda CX-60 and Mazda CX-90 become increasingly important for the brand.

Company executives have acknowledged that the Mazda 2 and CX-3 are due for replacement, though development priorities initially focused on larger SUVs and electrification programs.

A Critical Launch for Mazda

The arrival of the 2027 CX-3 could prove crucial for Mazda as competition intensifies in the affordable SUV segment. Chinese brands, including Chery and GWM, have rapidly gained ground with feature-packed compact SUVs at aggressive prices.

For Mazda, the new CX-3 represents more than just a replacement model. It is a chance to modernize one of its most successful vehicles while proving it can still compete in a market increasingly shaped by hybrid technology, value-focused buyers, and evolving consumer expectations.
