Kia has announced a recall affecting certain 2024 EV9 electric SUVs due to a software malfunction in the Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) feature. This feature allows drivers to remotely move the car forward or backward by holding a button on the key fob without anyone inside the vehicle—a function particularly useful for navigating tight parking spots. However, the software issue could prevent the car from stopping properly, creating a potential safety hazard.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that the malfunction stems from an error in the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) software. If a driver repeatedly stops the vehicle using the remote while moving at speeds of two miles per hour or less, the system may not apply sufficient brake pressure. This could lead to longer stopping distances and pose a serious risk, especially to pedestrians in the car’s path.

Kia has identified 12,400 EV9 models in the United States affected by this recall. These vehicles were manufactured between September 25, 2023, and May 28, 2024. Models built after May 28, 2024, have already been equipped with the updated IEB software and have not been impacted by the recall.

Safety Concerns and Remedy

The RSPA feature is designed to make parking in cramped spaces more convenient by allowing drivers to maneuver the vehicle remotely, avoiding potential door dings or the hassle of tight exits. However, the IEB software glitch could cause insufficient braking, which presents a serious concern. In the event that a pedestrian is in the car’s path, the risk of injury rises significantly.

Kia has acknowledged the issue and is urging owners of affected vehicles to visit their dealerships for a free software update. The solution involves upgrading the braking system software, which will introduce improved logic ensuring adequate brake pressure is applied in all scenarios when using the RSPA. This should restore the system’s intended functionality, allowing drivers to park their vehicles remotely with confidence.

The NHTSA emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue promptly to prevent any potential accidents. Kia owners can contact their local dealerships or visit the Kia website for further information about the recall and to schedule the necessary repairs.

A Closer Look at the 2024 Kia EV9

The 2024 Kia EV9 has garnered attention as one of the most family-friendly electric vehicles on the market today. Starting at around $55,000, the SUV boasts seating for up to seven passengers and a driving range of up to 304 miles on a full charge, depending on the size of the battery pack. This makes the EV9 an attractive option for families looking to adopt an electric vehicle without sacrificing space, comfort, or range.

The EV9 is built on Kia’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which allows for ultra-fast charging. Using an 800-volt charging system, the EV9 can recharge its battery from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes—ideal for long road trips where quick recharges can make a significant difference. The car’s blend of practicality, technology, and driving range has made it a popular choice in the growing electric SUV market.
