24 March 2016 : Uber has launched in two new African cities, Mombasa in Kenya and Abuja in Nigeria where the ride-sharing service is being offered. The expansion into Kenya’s second largest city and Nigeria’s capital city brings the total number of cities worldwide where the taxi-hailing service is available, to 400.

Last month, Uber also announced major expansions planned for three other major African countries: Uganda, Tanzania and Ghana, along with a strategy to avoid conflict with traditional taxi operators as was the case in a number of nations it had launched in.The service had previously launched in Lagos, Nigeria in 2015
Alon Lits, Uber Sub-Sahran Africa General Manager stated,“Uber is a new and exciting platform that is changing the way Kenyans move around their cities and we are shaping the future of cities across the world. These cities are progressive, forward-thinking cities that have a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be venturing further into Africa.”

Kagure Wamunyu, Operations Manager for Uber Kenya said in a statement. “Mombasa is a cultural and economic hub as well as a popular tourist destination that has a need for safe, reliable and efficient transportation and we are so excited to be launching here.”
“Uber is part of a broader evolution in transportation, it is an exciting platform that is changing the way we travel and shaping the future of cities across the world.”
