Facebook owned Whatsapp is one of the largest communication platform for users of different kind across nations. The company which hit the 1 billion mark last February in its 7th year anniversary had previously announced that it was planning to end its support to devices like Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7 and iPhone 3GS/iOS 6.

In its statement, the company said, “When we started WhatsApp in 2009, people’s use of mobile devices looked very different from today. The Apple App Store was only a few months old. About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia. Mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft – which account for 99.5 percent of sales today – were on less than 25 percent of mobile devices sold at the time. As we look ahead to our next seven years, we want to focus our efforts on the mobile platforms the vast majority of people use.”

The reason behind the company’s decision to stop the services was that the mentioned platforms do not offer the kind of capabilities it needs to expand the app’s features in the future. The company has been releasing a series of updates right from security updates like end-to-end encryption to feature updates like video calling to enable the users experience the platform much better.

Though platforms like BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 was included in the original list, the company said it is extending support for them until June 30, 2017. If your whatsapp is not working, you might need to either update your OS or change your phone to stay connected.
