As The Pirate Bay celebrates its 18th birthday, its founder asserts that it “cannot be stopped”

The Pirate Bay celebrated 18 this week, and for many, it remains a fantastic repository for accessing specific downloads (many of which, obviously, aren’t entirely legal — the clue is in the name!). However, The Pirate Bay is no longer what it once was. It has to rely on a variety of proxies to survive these days.

As a result, many more people have tried to spam your computer with pop-ups by making their own ‘fake’ (but authentic-looking) copies. Yes, The Pirate Bay is (essentially) pirated these days, which is amusing!

With these proxies in mind, it’s difficult to estimate how much traffic they still receive. Nonetheless, one such proxy manages to attract over 25 million monthly visitors, indicating that, despite their issues, they’re still doing rather well.

But, at the age of 18, how much longer can it go on? Following a conversation with one of the website’s co-founders, they have stated that it “cannot be stopped.”

Despite no longer having any official involvement in the group (largely due to him and his two other co-founders going to prison for setting it up in the first place), Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sund stated in an interview (courtesy of TorrentFreak) that he sees no reason why the website can’t continue to operate for many more years.

“Pirate Bay has a life of its own and can not be stopped. The only way for it to die is if people running it grow tired and try to kill it off. There’s no power from the movie or tech companies that can affect that.”

I believe it is safe to state that the popular era of internet piracy has passed. I believe it now mostly serves those who are familiar with the appropriate websites and how to use them. Websites like this can be a minefield of malware and shady downloads for the unwary user.

However, this is undeniably challenging terrain. It’s difficult to deny that The Pirate Bay has made a fortune (mostly) by stealing and distributing copyrighted material for the past 18 years. Piracy is, of course, unlawful.

At TechStory, we do not support piracy in any way.
