GM is set to invest in two facilities in Michigan which will be manufacturing electric vehicles and EV batteries. Around $6.5 billion is known to be invested by the company. These facilities will be generating around 4000 jobs in Michigan. Other details are expected to be released soon about the vehicles and batteries that are to be manufactured in the location.

On Tuesday, GM is expected to announce the massive investment at an event in Lansing, Michigan. Wednesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer will deliver her State of the State address and could shed additional details on Michigan automakers, such as GM and Ford, and how their transition to electrification is benefiting the workforce.

For its plant in Michigan GM has various plans including Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center.  An all-new facility that will significantly expand the company’s battery technology operations and accelerate the development and commercialization of longer-range, more affordable electric vehicle batteries. For its Orion Assembly plant, GM received $1.3 billion in an approved tax rebate, where Chevrolet Bolt EV is being manufactured. GM’s total investment is expected to be around $4 billion. GM’s spokesperson,  Dan Flores said, “GM appreciates the support it has received from the Governor, the State Legislature, Orion Township, the City of Lansing and Delta Township related to two prospective projects that GM is considering in Orion Township and Lansing.  Until these projects receive final approval, we have no comment on potential announcement timing.”

Electrification

GM’s electrification goals include rolling out 30 electric vehicle models into the market by 2025. The Orion assembly plant is expected to be for the new models that will be manufactured by the automaker. Last year as Bolt EV’s recalls and other issues have come up, the company has been struggling with its production line. In addition to this, the chip shortage issue halted their factories multiple times. However, General Motors successfully started production of its electric pickup, GMC Hummer EV in December 2021.

Furthermore, GM’s factory in Detroit, Michigan will be a Factory ZERO facility. It is a result of the automaker’s goals of “zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.”  The selections of facilities by GM are a big win for Michigan, which missed out on three Ford Motor Co. battery factories and a Ford electric-vehicle assembly plant that will be built in Kentucky and Tennessee. The company has said that it would soon announce that an existing factory would build electric pickup trucks.
