ANI’s most recent Tweet reads, ‘On being asked about allegations of a government ban on Chinese phones under Rs 12,000, MoS R Chandrasekhar replied, “Such a plan does not exist. It is the government’s task and duty to build Indian brands. If Indian brands are excluded owing to unfair trade practices, we will intervene and remedy the situation ”

In fact, there was recently news of a ban on Chinese phones costing under Rs 12,000 in India. It was claimed that the government made this move to encourage domestic businesses like as Lava and Micromax. However, Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar has recently dismissed this claim.

Chinese firms dominate the Indian smartphone market.

Let us remind you that India is presently the world’s second largest smartphone market, but it is dominated by Chinese companies. Domestic firms are unable to compete with these Chinese firms. According to market research firm Counterpoint, Chinese businesses sell 80 percent of phones priced under Rs 12,000 in India.

That is, Chinese businesses’ smartphones dominate India’s mid-segment and budget-segment smartphone markets. According to Counterpoint, smartphones priced under $150 accounted for one-third of India’s sales in the quarter ending June 2022, with Chinese manufacturers accounting for 80% of shipments.
