Monsoons are undoubtedly the best time to sit back and relax by watching your favourite movies and TV shows. However, it also means figuring out the perfect screen size for your living space and viewing needs. While bigger being better is true, you still need to pick the right screen size for your TV.

While choosing the perfect screen size for your living space and viewing needs during monsoons, you are looking for a TV that doesn’t cause eye strain or one where you don’t get to see the full picture from an angle. Despite how difficult it seems, all it takes is a little math to figure out the perfect screen for your living space during the monsoons.

How to measure the right screen size for your living space

Back when HDTVs were the standard, the Society of Motion Picture and Technical Engineers (SMTPE) recommended having your TV occupy a 30-degree arc of your vision or a 30-degree arc from where you planned to sit while THX recommended a 40-degree arc. As 4K TVs became more common, the common consensus became that you could sit closer to your TV and still comfortably watch it without noticing any pixels.

If we consider a 40-degree arc as the minimum field of view, then the maximum distance-to-screen-size ratio would be 1.4:1. To find the right screen size, the first thing you need to do is measure the distance from your couch to the place where you plan to install the TV and divide that number (in inches) by 1.4.

Remember, choosing a bigger or smaller TV won’t ruin your viewing experience and the formula is essentially a way to see what screen size is best for your needs.

Alternate way to choose the right screen size for your living space

If the above maths seems a little too much then THX recommends a simpler way to decide the right screen size for your living size. According to THX, all you need to do is divide your screen size by 0.835 to find the maximum distance from which you can comfortably watch your TV. Since we are looking to find the screen size, you take the distance from where you plan to place your TV and multiply it by 0.835.

For example, if your TV is 5 feet away from your couch then as per THX’s formula, a 50-inch TV will be the right size. THX, however, is not alone to offer a formula to calculate the right screen size for your TV. Sony recommends a viewing distance that’s about 1.5 times the vertical size of your TV. By vertical size, Sony is not referring to the diagonal measurement but the vertical height of the TV.

For example, the 50-inch Croma 4K Ultra HD LED Smart TV is about 26-inches tall and to calculate the distance between your couch and TV, multiply the vertical number by 1.5. If that also seems too complicated then you can go 1:1 with the diagonal screen size. If your couch is 50-inches away from the TV then get a 50-inch TV.
