Intel might be the target of Qualcomm’s acquisition. Qualcomm has reportedly reached out to Intel to talk about a possible takeover, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Yet, it is definitely nowhere near being a done deal. There exists a lot of ambiguity with respect to this matter.

Intel: The Formerly Mighty Giant Is Now Encountering Difficulties

Intel, which was once the industry leader in processors, has faced several problems in the last few years. Actually, the company has announced a remarkable $1.6 billion loss and is planning to lay off more than 10,000 employees.

Intel’s stock value has taken a dive of 60% just within this year, making things even worse.  Why the downturn? The competition is more heated than ever, and Intel is having troubles adapting to emerging technological trends. In 2020, Apple, one of its biggest clients, dealt a painful blow when it announced its shift to develop its own chips instead. That’s correct, Apple has replaced Intel chips with its own M-series processors.

Qualcomm: The New Kid on the PC Block

You might be familiar with Qualcomm thanks to its Snapdragon processors that provide power to various Android devices. Lately, Qualcomm has been making a stronger presence in the PC market. These impressive chips, the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite, are receiving a lot of recognition for their AI features and overall performance.

Unlike Intel, Qualcomm doesn’t produce its own chips. They substitute with manufacturing partners, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung.

What potential gains does Qualcomm see from a purchase of Intel? Intel has a number of important assets and technologies that might greatly benefit Qualcomm in the PC and server markets.

The AI Race: Intel Lags Behind

Other than that, Intel is having difficulties in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Nvidia is, without a doubt, leading the AI landscape, especially with its processors being the preferred option for generative AI applications. The reasons for Intel being in difficulty include its slow pace in this race; that is another cause for concern.

Qualcomm’s progress in AI chips could lead them to shorten the gap if they acquire Intel. Yet, it will not be simple, especially with the oversight that this potential acquisition will undergo from regulators. Major agreements, such as this one, typically attract close scrutiny from government bodies, and Qualcomm would have to complete numerous tasks to bring it about.

Will It Happen?

At this time, neither Qualcomm nor Intel has commented publicly on the rumored takeover. Regulatory difficulties, financial talks, and industry factors may all affect whether this deal manages to take shape.

What Could This Mean for Us?

The acquisition of Intel by Qualcomm has the potential to create some very exciting alterations in the tech landscape. There may be a prevalence of innovative processors that fuse Qualcomm’s AI features with Intel’s existing technology. Alternatively, we might see Qualcomm making strides in the PC and server segments, which would have a transformation in the present market ruled by Intel and Nvidia.

One thing’s for sure: The next few months may introduce some noteworthy changes. So, for those who are enthusiastic about technology (or just interested in keeping an eye on industry happenings), this is something to pay close attention to.
